Ladies and Gents, a little technical help if possible. A chap at work has invested in a KODI android tv box and reckons its the best thing since sliced bread as it allows you to stream the Sky sports channels and movies essentially for free. Anyone got any experience of these they can share?

My brother got one recently and despite not being much of a sports fan, is impressed with both the range of available channels and the picture / sound quality. He used a chromecast USB device prior to the KODI box.

My son informs me that he has one (he is a computer/techy wizard)

How does it work getting the sky sports and movies essencially for free? Foreign broadcasts of it?

I believe that they are all streamed,so essentially you need a

I've been debating on whether to get a KODI box yarco, so would be really interested to know how you get on.
The issue is that the Internet isn't that simple, (is it ever?) generally you are reliant on severs being close to you and them having good bandwidth at this end.
Netflix is hosted by Amazon in Dublin and Frankfurt with massive bandwidth and processing power.
A lot of these streams are some guy in the states or the UAE with a laptop, it's the equivalent of having a Skype call with someone who has a dodgy internet connection, regardless of how fast your download speed is, it can improve their upload speed.
Despite not actually being a career techie I seem to spend my life around this ****, can you tell?
I've recently installed Kodi (via playstore) onto my phone and stream through it to the TV via chromecast. It does play up at times but it is mostly very good. I am considering buying an android box and connect through ethernet to eradicate issues watching it on TV.
I'd recommend you perhaps just try it on your phone or tablet and then you wont spend a penny. I've had no issues watching that way. It is a miles better picture than the web streams, no pop ups etc.
You need operation robocop for the Premier League pass (every game and I believe the games are repeated over and over), its so easy to do (it looks far more complicated than it is). I don't understand the not user friendly part because it is a great interface. Takes about 15 mins max to set up and I'm not kidding.

as someone who has never tried anything like this where is all the content i.e. music, gigs, films, documentaries Other than your broadband cost, do you pay any other subscriptions? I always thought to get the Sky sports etc you had to subscribe unless by dodgy foreign streaming.

Totally free of charge, no subscriptions, (some of them will) but operation robocop that has the football is entirely free..
If you have an android phone or tablet download kodi on playstore and then use the link and follow instructions. Do not bother pissing around with wiziwig or ifeed2all etc anymore, they are total crap in comparison.
I downloaded the kodi.tv app for windows today but haven't made much sense of it yet.
As I mentioned before, my brother has it and while speaking to him today, every channel I mentioned is available to him.
Sky Sports, Movies, Arts, Discovery, MTV, ESPN, BT Sport, yada, yada...
(and then some - thousands if you really really want)
You don't need to buy these preloaded boxes. Anything Android will run Kodi so try it out to start with on your phone for no cost at all. You could then just plug your phone into the TV to watch if you don't want to watch on the device itself also there's a way of sending Kodi over Chromecast if you have one. You can of course pick up the various bits of hardware cheap and install it yourself with a little googling, a LOT of these android boxes have really crappy hardware in them. You can install Kodi on Amazon Fire TV kit which works really well.
If you have a PC within spitting distance of the TV you can always hook that up to the TV and run Kodi on that for net cost of nothing (well maybe a cable).
If you fancy a bit of monkeying about you can get a Now TV box for £10 and sideload Plex onto it and can do all kinds of cool stuff with that too
