If you had to have one or the other (playing for Sunderland, that is), which would it be?

According to reports, O'Shea cost us 5 million quid. I'm sure a similar offer, maybe a little more, for Onuoha would have been accepted by City. I was well impressed with Onuoha during his loan spell here and thought the club would have jumped at the chance to bring to Sunderland a young and talented lad with an excellent attitude. Makes me think that Bruce plans to use O'Shea at centre halve as Onuoha has to be a better option as a right full back.

On another note, i quite like the look of bardsley, O'Shea, Brown, Richo as a back four.
 
I think O'Shea, on and off the park will be magnificent.

I thought Onouha was good.

I like Nedum, but O'Shea's pedigree is exactly what Bruce thinks is needed at the moment. Both would be nice, but if only one for the upcoming season? Then O'Shea.
 
O'Shea on ability and experience. Onouha can't get near the City team. O'Shea started regularly for United...

Simples.
 
We lost more points from winning positions than West Ham last season. If we had of won all of the games where we were leading we would have finished 26 points higher up the table.

Experience is therefore required - on the field knowledge of when to twist and when to stick.

For this reason O'Shea is a better buy than Onuaha
 
For me it all depends on the postion Bruce has lined up for O'Shea. Ppl were always garn on about Onuoha being played at centre halve, but i never saw that myself. To me, Onuoha is a full back. Conversely, most see O'Shea as a full back (some even suggesting on the left, which i would never agree with) whereas i think he'll be better in the centre (obviously i'm aware he's mostly played RB for United).
 
Why not both? it gives us lots of flexibility and options:

Onuoha - Brown - O'Shea - Bardsley or switch Onouha to centre with O'Shea and Brown at right back.

With both in the squad it gives great competition to Turner and Bramble too, they would have to be at their very best to get a game.

I still think Onuoha is a possible loan again!
 
I think Onouoha can only get better, he's skilful yet young, O'Shea's good but a bit past it IMO. I'd love to have either of them in my team though!
 
I guess it becomes a discussion of Experience vs ability? (Not that i'm implying O'Shea lacks in ability). We wouldn't see Onuoha's Chelsea goal from O'Shea, but then Onuoha hasn't been there, hasn't done it and doesn't have the t-shirt. Mind you, as mackemneil says, i'd love to have them both with O'Shea in the centre and Onuoha at full back - that would be class.
 
I think in the long run it will be Ned but we are not in long run mode right now, we are in next season mode and next season its O'Shea for all the reasons given above. We did not buy a footballer in O'Shea we bought years of winning mentality in him and Brown.

Why not both some ask, money is the answer.
 
Everyone is banging on about experience and O'Shea but, what experience does he have at our level fighting it out in mid table behind a dodgy midfield (maybe not so dodgy now) or a possible relegation dogfight?
He's 31 and while not a crock like Mensah is still prone to injury, Onouha is a very good young player who I would rather have as he will improve, not sure how much if any O'shea will improve.
How much will we be able to sell O'Shea for in 5 years time against how much we can sell Onouha for in 5 years time?
 
O'Shea is a top class defender who (in my book) would walk into any team (other than Man U) in the EPL.

Nedum did well for us and may turn into a great player. The only reason to prefer him to O'Shea is the possible resale value IMO.
 
Ned was "ok" for us IMO. His inexperience told far too often for my liking. He seemed very flatfooted and was often skinned by pacy wingers...who knew he had a turning circle of the QE2!
With O'Shea and Brown, I'm looking for a calmness in our defence which has been sadly lacking for years.
It's interesting to note that most Man.United fans rate Brown as the better of the two.
 
O'Shea was always good for United. Brown when not injured was nothing less than special!
 
o'shea for me too, onuoha scored 1 of the goals of the season at chelsea but his marking from set piece's left a lot to be desired, good player overall but o'shea is better imo
 
I can't really answer this.

Onouha would provide future benefits and O'Shea will be great for the next couple of seasons. I don;t think I can pick between the two.

I would like Bruce to sign onouha anyhow (Think he'll be nearer 8m than 5m) as we are creating a fantastic squad and he would certainly add to this
