The result of the General Election was inconclusive and there will have to be a re-run. The referendum was inconclusive too.
Really? Would you like to reconsider that comment? I seem to remember that the majority voted out. Or am I wrong?
They'll be a Brexit still - just maybe one that involves staying in the single market and customs union. If the country wanted a UKIP Brexit they'd have voted for it yesterday. But we will still be leaving the EU.
I thought you were saying we shouldn't have another general election to try and sort this out. No one is talking about another referendum, just an election. Of course to get a working government another referendum might be part of the deal.......
We won't get continued membership of the single market and customs union without freedom of movement and huge membership fees. This is where Labour's policy on Brexit has been so vague - they talk about wanting the benefits, but can't bring themselves to admit what the UK will have to give to get them
Yep. Good isn't it? Norway here we come! Minimal economic disruption and you get some notional idea of sovereignty.
Mr Barwell, the author of a book titled 'How to Win a Marginal Seat', saw a majority of just 165 in his marginal seat overturned by Labour candidate Sarah Jones.
Won't happen, under the Tories anyway, because control over immigration is a big issue here. If Corbyn delivered it, he'd lose huge swathes of Northern support
Depends how much the Tories want to cling on. If the EU price for what the DUP wants is some element of freedom of movement (may not be the whole shebang as now, might be limited to those with job offers or joining families - which are the majority of those coming from the EU now anyway). Also there are now plenty of Tory remainer MPs who will be much bolder in voicing their views. All the Scottish ones know how Scotland voted on Brexit. With a tiny cobbled together majority the Prime Minister has to take more differences of opinion into account. She will depend on getting at least abstentions from Labour, SNP and Lib Dems on some key softer Brexit votes to neutralise the few dozen Tory anti European fanatics. May is building up an impressive list of U turns, why not add border control to it? She seems brilliant at doublethink, genuinely believing she has never changed her position on anything, well within her capabilities to do this. Brilliant. Though to be honest I don't think May has the skills or character to manage this, so more chaos to come. She'll have to go, as the Tories know the electorate don't like her.
Stan No offence meant, just in case you were wondering. I kind of agree that we need to sort this out sooner rather than later. Problem is, Brexit negotiations start in 10 days and we need some form of stability before then. I can see May attending the meetings but more as a puppet of her cohorts such as Davies and Johnson. She ran a very weak campaign and is not a leader of the Tories and certainly not the country. That has been proven overnight. When calling the election she was in a position of strength, but she managed to throw that away. I do not blame her for calling it, I blame her though for losing it. A very strong campaign by Corbyn's masters, Momentum though.
Exactly Stan. As DT would say, she doesn't have the minerals Silver lining for me is the collapse in sterling this morning though
May's credibility is totally shot, she got the leadership by hiding during the referendum campaign and taking advantage of Gove's treachery. She has tried to do the same during the election campaign, hiding from combative scrutiny of the TV debates and running by a country mile the worst election campaign in living memory. She is a talentless coward with no vision of how to take the country forward at a time that we need outstanding leadership. There is every possibility that events could engineer another election by the autumn, she wouldn't survive to lead the Tories into that but Labour have gained massive momentum (no pun intended) and there is every possibility that Corbyn would be PM as a result. As I predicted earlier, Boris will be PM as soon as he can engineer the ambush...
Heads are rolling, May totally isolated now. Gideon obviously creaming himself now... http://www.standard.co.uk/news/poli...f-of-staff-nick-timothy-resigns-a3561921.html
Corbyn has achieved almost exactly what Gordon Brown achieved at his lowest. Hardly anything to crow about.
I think that's unfair. Corbyn has had to put up with all sorts of hindrances that Brown did not. If the election were a handicap, Labour would have won by a mile. Corbyn has exceeded the wildest of expectations when the snap election was called.
The difference is Brown did it from Government and a healthy majority whereas Corbyn did it from opposition that was far further back in the polls seven weeks ago. We shouldn't doubt the brilliant use of social media by Momentum which regularly sent out scaremongering tweets to hundreds of thousands of potential young voters. The days when the Sun and Daily Mail were the 'kingmakers' are long gone...
It might be unfair, but it's true. So is that fact that we have voted to leave the EU and the Tories won the election.
