On the contrary. I moved to Sunderland in 1960 and lived there for 7 years. I loved the place, loved the people, loved the beer (especially Nimmo's at that time) and loved going to Roker Park. I was involved with Sunderland Football Club (in a non-footballing capacity) and received a free season pass each year. I never missed a mid-week game, saw and met the great Charlie Hurley and also Brian Clough among others. They had a wonderful Night Club there at the time called Weatherall's - we had nothing like it in Hull - where I saw (and met) some of the great entertainers of that era. I don't know what part you was living in Ernie (I lived in Hendon where Raich Carter was born) but you must have resided under a rock somewhere if you thought they were 13,000 miles from civilization.
Cheers Lambo, I'll look out for some dodgy bastard bringing that in as a PX.Looks like Liam's parking's as good as his shooting...

I wasn't being entirely serious Roo. I also lived in Hendon. Harrogate Street and The Garths. A lot of it was fine, some great little backstreet boozers but in the mid-80s there was massive problems with drugs and crime. We were burgled twice in a few months (not that we had a lot to steal!) and that was with our German Shepherd guarding the premises. The whole area has been demolished now. You wouldn't recognise it.
Older friends I had at the time always spoke very highly of Charlie Hurley, both as a footballer and a person. I took in some games at the old Roker Park, but in the mid-80s Sunderland were not at the top of their game.
Best night club: Ku Klub. Good but not as good as Spiders!
Best beer: We used to drink Vaux in The Brewery Tap. But it was always full of Coppers what with the police station being opposite. It had John Lennon Working Class Hero on the juke box. Never seen that song on a juke box anywhere else.
Ernie - Roo: Bloody hell, lads, you sure knew how to find Sunderland 's underbelly; Hendon is on a par with east end of Hessle Rd, stopped drinking there when the drugs took over. Only ever go into Sunderland on business or for games, social is Newcastle or Durham, although I have lived slap-bang in the middle of the three for 23yrs. There are far worse places , like East Hull, for instance.
It improved my street cred saying I lived in Hendon! People used to presume I must be a tough guy. I used to drink in The Bush and got on well with the local Hell's Angels 'cos they liked my dog.
Hendon had a beach too. Although it doubled as a dogging site and was only accessible by going through an unlit underpass which always had druggies hanging around it.
Not smart like Roker.
Have you been to Roker seafront in the last year? Really good use of European regeneration funds.
I used to live in Tynemouth, across from the Broadway pub (now a mini Sainsbury, I think), loved it there; Parkers on a Friday night was one of the 'if you're not divorced when you go in, you will be when you come out' venues. Luckily the wife was always with me as we strolled to the village itself; now that is a good day out with the lads, these days.
Haven't been to Roker for a while. Once got caught in a rip tide whilst swimming off the coast there. Scary. Nearly drowned.
The Broadway is indeed now a Sainsbury's. My Missus had a market stall at Tynemouth market for many years so I was often up there. Nice place to go for a drink. **** parking restrictions though.

Did you ever get down to Ryhope Ernie? I spent a couple of boozy weekends with pigeon fancier mates about 20 years ago, it was lively for such a small place ..... and the black beach!!
What did your other half sell on her market stall Ern?

Damn i was gonna go stone washed denim. She'd a cleaned up up there. Missed a trick there ErnieShe had her fingers in a lot of pies over the years.
Started with bathbombs, soaps and the like. Natural ingredients, hypo-allagenic etc.
Then moved into soya wax, woodwick candles set in antique china cups.
Finally, jewellery and knitwear.
She's a crafty bastard, my Missus.
