That was the year that it was chock full of Saints fans in the FA Cup S/F against Everton..the pitch invasion of both sets of fans at the end was pretty hairy...
Talking of pitch invasions, here is Brizzle Rovers old ground, Eastville, which was my very first away match in '78 and over 10,000 Saints filled the end shown and after going 2-0 down in an FA Cup match a few hundred thought it was a good idea to try and get the game abandoned and went on the pitch...it never worked btw! please log in to view this image
I could always remember Southamptons weird tapered terracing behind the goal but I never knew they once had those 'box seats'. Excellent attempt at trying to cram as much people in into limited space..
I nearly got crushed to death during my first ever pro footy match trying to get out of the West Stand at The Dell in about 1970 against Man Utd, I was about 8 and my Dad took us there to see Law, Charlton and Best, he was a Devonian Utd fan and I ended up with a lifetime love of the Saints after this match. Over 30,000 crammed into the tiny stadium that day I believe.
When built to the Leitch design yes, before that.....well before my time. Both are now listed buildings I believe.
Nice area mate, really picked the best parts of Soton I used to buy weed off a big black guy with gold teeth on Clovelly Road, even served me up on Christmas day. Legend.
