That's not the rules for var.

Var cannot be used to change a free kick into a non free kick.

If that was explained clearly as clear and obvious error that hand in in box then they check if its deliberate that's one thing. But its a free outside the box so they've just said it was a pen but then ok its a harsh call.

The ref seems to want to get in put players way but hes just ignored a dive there.
