I always thought EssexGull was local, based on the fact that he had too much inside information on one or two of the regular posters and the area to be someone posting from Essex or elsewhere. EGDWright was another fine contributor with some excellent views on the club, suspect he is still beavering away somewhere uncovering otherwise unknown or lost histories and tales of our club.
Bizarrely, EssexGull also claimed to be a Torquay fan.
EssexGull had an ongoing campaign against that ex marine (forgotten his name) who used to come up from Portsmouth to every game. Reckoned he knew him from years ago. Weren’t there two EssexGulls, the original and a pale imitation?
Pompey Pete, met him on many away trips down south.
Remember it well and Pompey Pete as twowrights rightly called. There could well have been two EssexGulls, the original and an imposter. One of them really got to Pete and he stopped posting ( biting) as some of the stuff was getting quite personal.
I thought one of the EssexGulls was also Days of Speed, remember him? I knew DofS, and fronted him about it and of course he denied it. All a bit of fun back in the day but one or two of the posters on CI did go too far with the personal stuff and I had a run in with one of them, who of course denied it, but his posts did me a lot of damage (financial) and the stuff he accused friends of mine of was complete rubbish. Another poster even contacted another posters workplace in an attempt to do the person damage, which was all a bit embarrassing at the time.
That would have been bummers, he ended the poor guys career in one phone call.
This also happened on Tiger Chat back in the day, the perpetrator occasionally posts on here these days. Dreadful business and truly appalling behaviour.
It wasn’t. I know the two concerned and one day they met up and got along OK. Not putting names to it as I met the one who tried to get the other, who I have known years, into trouble and after arguing with him on CI and on here, introduced by Trumpton Tiger, (the poster in question no longer posts) had more than a few pints with him a number of times.
He went under the moniker 'Sun40' - talked to him a few times at away games, Fulham was last one, he was sat with young Jacko; saw him at Arsenal one time and he was stuck away with the sit-down types, he got regaled with 'Pompey, Pompey give us a song' - he gave some kind of a wave as I recall.
A good description of him would be 'pocket battleship'.
That was the name. Always came across as a good bloke. Yes, when you see clips of Arsenal away it was embarrassing to see so many sat down.

In fairness he could be both locally-based and from Essex (or Torquay). I don't know if you remember Tobes, who was an Everton fan who posted regularly on here and other City groups? I never asked if it was him, but I'm pretty sure that I used to know him in real life, and if it was him then he was an avuncular and very Liverpudlian guy who posted on our boards because he lived and worked here.
For me both the old FootyMad that I was on and this board I think are just as much local news and chat groups for a lot of people anyway. I know some other boards are more focussed on solely football but, without wanting to open a whole other can of worms about supporting your local club or not, I have no issue with people who've moved here from somewhere else at a reasonable age and still support their childhood club coming on here to discuss the non-footie stuff provided they don't WUM on every actual football thread.
For all that this board especially I think is a pretty broad church you know the type of chat and type of banter you're going to get on a football group and if that's the way you choose to get your news about what's happening on the A63 or whatever then so be it.
