Ola Toivonen could be a good cheep option too.

Dick sometimes did that by dropping Ola Toivonen deeper from his out and out striker role(A player Dick may look at yet).

Mind you. a mover for Toivonen would add a new dimention to our 433 which could see our front line like this

Toivonen
Lens--------Defoe
I had a feeling we'd end up signing him.<laugh> Defo a Dick choice.

A loan all but confirms that no more money will be spent as he'dhave cost about £2m max.

Bad times :-(

We haven't created much space on the wage bill. Sounds to me like we've had to sacrifice transfer budget to supplement the wage budget which would explain the single year.

Anyway, he'll be in his 30s next year and he won't be getting any quicker. This works for me.

Don't know anything about him. He might be **** but I hope he might put in a few hearty performances and it rub off on those around him a bit.

New signing speaks to safc.com.

Ola Toivonen can’t wait to get started after moving to Sunderland on a season-long loan deal.

The attacking midfielder has a wealth of experience having scored goals in Sweden, Holland and France, whilst also picking up 43 caps and scoring nine goals at senior international level.

Toivenen is also relishing the prospect of linking up with a host of familiar faces as he looks to hit the ground running, revealing that he has a good understanding with a former team-mate who has already wowed the Stadium of Light crowd.

Speaking to safc.com the 29-year-old revealed his excitement ahead of his first experience in the Barclays Premier League.

“I’m very pleased to be a Sunderland player and I’m excited to get started,” said Toivonen. “I can’t wait to start playing and have my first training with the boys; it is always nice to meet new team-mates.

“I’ve played in the Swedish, the Dutch and the French league but I’ve saved the best, so I’m very happy and very excited to play in the Barclays Premier League; it is going to be a fantastic experience.”

He continued: “I’m a hard-working player and I will try to do my best for the team. I play easy football and like to combine with the midfielders, strikers and wingers, but when the crosses come in I always want to be in the box to help the strikers and score goals.

“I worked with Dick Advocaat for one year at PSV and we came along very well so I’m excited to work together again.”

And the head coach isn’t the only familiar face in Sunderland’s ranks, with Toivonen regularly featuring alongside Seb Larsson for the national team whilst also playing with Jeremain Lens at PSV.

“I already knew Sebastian from the national team and we’ve played together for five or six years, and I also know Jeremain Lens from our two years together at PSV.

“We [Ola and Jeremain] like to play together and he is a fantastic winger with excellent speed; he can give good cross to the strikers and it is always nice to have people you know around you if you have any questions about the club or the team.”

At least we are signing average players on the cheap rather than average players for a fortune I suppose. Probably the way forward, unfortunately. This might push one of our no hopers who is on a larger wage out of the door, releasing a few more funds for transfer deadline day.

Take our other AM Gomez. He's way way way better. He's not a flair player though. Hardworking, industrious, strong, good in the air. He'll score goals, he'll set them up, he'll bring the team together going forward. Think Naismith/Walters in attacking work effort(not style) He's the sort of player we massively need and do not have because he works for the team. Not an average player, he's a good player, way way better than what we have.

He improves us no doubt. He knows Lens and Dick well, should settle quickly. Good signing imo.

I think he'll be ahead of Fletcher in the pecking order, I could only see one club for Fletcher at this stage in his career and they've just been dumped out of the Champions League so are probably skint.

I'd agree with all of that. Not a fancy player at all, but does as instructed and can be that missing link.

Rumour has it Lazar Markovic is being touted around for a loan as well, if you can fetch him in, he'd be a good loan I think Advocaat has worked with him before as well.

Off to Fenerbahce isn't he?

Pleased we got him but FFS another loan that means we still have only spent about £10m that means we have money to spend before Tuesday time to get out of pound land and into John Lewis we can't even get past security in Harrods

Like the sound of him by the description, maybe get a game after the international break?

Paying double the price now though mate. It's a matter of common sense. We've signing enough over priced players who were only worth half of what we paid. No value left in the market.
