I'm not that optimistic about windows 8. Especially the part where they don't allow another operating system to be installed ie no dual boot with Linux! The 480s are fermi cards so yea, they get hot! highest I've recorded is 100 deg but I've heard theyl take more than that and they're under warranty for those temps. Idle temps are fine though. think I'm gonna add a couple more fans though for safe measure.

The other OS thing doesn't apply to builders, only to sellers of prebuilt PCs, and even then most manufacturers will hopefully allow for that option to be switched off in the BIOS.
 
I thought Windows 8 was just going to be pretty much the same as 7 but more tools for touchscreen?

EDIT: BTW the components listed by everyone is that all the components I need? or will I need to buy wires etc, or do they already come as standard.
 
I think he should hold off getting a new graphics card until early next year when AMD/Nvidia start selling their new cards designed using the 28nm Process architecture. Even if he doesn't want one of these new cards the current gen models like the GTX 560/570 should fall pretty sharply price wise once the next gen arrives, so a lot of savings will be made so he can shift more of his budget to other components like PSU/CPU.

OcUK is another good website to purhase computer parts, yes. Iv'e used them for many years however i feel lately their prices are way higher than other websites, for example my brother told me to try scan.co.uk, i gave them a go for the same parts as OcUK there was a 40-50 quid difference in price.

Shame really i always liked to use them, also they stopped giving out discounts, i remember i used to get 10% off order codes and what not but now they seem to do nothing apart from weekly deals which are still cheaper elsewhere. Excellent forum though, lots of people there who are eager to help you with problems and advice.

Yeah I checked OCZ for components you used in the build even a CPU + MoBO bundle was 90p more :D

Well 90p is hardly anything haha, its always good to look around though. Iv'e used all three (Scan,OcUK & microdirect) never really had any
problems with any of them.

I do a Windows7/Linux Mint dual boot myself but I only really use Windows 7 for gaming. With my current GPU being a 3 slot card I usually hover around 24°C idle and it only rises to about 40-45°C while playing Crysis 2 with hi-rez patch, though I'm sure Battlefield 3 will treat my GPU like a bitch. I'd like to try a water cooled sli build in the future as it looks like fun:emoticon-0103-cool:

Played Battlefield 3 beta, was suprised how well it ran on my single 460. Can't wait for it to be released though, ain't buying Modern Warefare 3 since they added that pay monthly crap.
 
Why bother with a 40 quid soundcard? Put that in a decent cpu. also your psu..looks really cheap.Problem with psu's is when you play a lot its' used a lot so it needs to be a good unit, also take into account how much sound it makes, I'd look into a super silent model if i was you, same goes for cpu coolers.

You will need a selection of wires (you can never have too many as you'll eventually use them later down the line for any upgrades). Make sure you get some cable ties or some cable management system - Ensuring the system is in order and looks neatish with so many cables around is one of the hardest jobs when building your own rig and requires a lot of thought as to how you're going to set up the system (physically) and where you will route the wires to minimise clutter.

The motherboard comes with most wires supplied. I got the ASUS P8Z68-V and it came with all the SATA Cables and even an SLI bridge cable for some reason. But yea, you can never have too many spare cables. I would definately get some spare computer screws, most parts don't come with the screws, normally the case has some.

Better to get the SLi bridge cable with the motherboard than having to source one elsewhere. I don't like the sata cables with the P8Z68-V though, broke the clip on one of them far too easily when trying to take one out like a normal sata cable, ie not pinching the connector.

I know what you mean they look terrible don't they. Also are yours L shaped? i had to reverse mine because my SSD is fixed to the bottom of the Hard Drive caddy inside the case since thats the only SSD slot it has. Couldn't use it the proper way because of that L shaped connector.

Yeah mine are L at one end and straight at the other, but no bother for me since I'm not using my 2.5" cage. Bit disappointing that it only came with 4 SATA cables total too, considering there are (at least) 6 ports SATA.
 
I will need one to cool the CPU right? as it doesn't have one? Do I need anything else with the one you linked me?

Oh and will need to buy any virus software or can I go back to free ones like I used to, I don't mind buying them.

is one of the best fan based coolers at the moment. Downside to these are the size of them.

What about the downside of it costing £60? I highly doubt he'll be that seriously into overclocking to see the benefits, better to start cheap then upgrade as/if necessary. Unless money is no object of course.

Free anti virus/spyware software is fine, as long as its decent of course.
