I don't think Clarke is all people crack him up to be. Was listening to an Udders fan on TalkShyte this week and he said it was a myth he was a good manager. The coaching has been done by Terry McDermott and Clarke has had a fortune available to him for player purchases. Also without Rhodes they would be nowhere near where they are today.
It was wages, rather than fees, where he spent big, he also changed a large part of the team each season, this is from an Udders fan on the negatives of his tenure...
Clark is wasteful in the transfer market, and more than happy to spend freely. He has overhauled his squad three times during his Huddersfield tenure, building a good side that only needed adjustments and then replacing them with numerous other players who we certainly didn’t need. All too often he released a good academy graduate and replaced them with an experienced mercenary. The sale of James Berrett and replacing him with Joey Gudjonsson is as bad a piece of business as I can recall.
He's spending it on wages. They've got one of the biggest fan bases in the division and no debt. The whole of their turnover is available for their day to day costs because transfer fees and other investments the chairman puts the money in for.
