I just have a ****-hot PC complete with Freeview/Freesat card attached to a 42" LED TV. Works perfectly for all TV inc. recording, internet streaming, Games, music, DVD, Blu-Ray etc. Output via a HDMI video card and HDMI soundcard to a 5.1 external amp and I get arguably better quality for everything via a single device than having loads of external boxes around. Dunno if it ultimately works out cheaper but it's certainly better, (IMO of course).
It's amazing how people get put off from upgrading their internet when it probably only costs them a few quid more a month, my parents are the same they are always going over their allowance and paying extra instead of paying a couple of quid more for a better connection/router etc.
I live in Karoo land and will stand up for them, very often people complaining about stuff need to get a new router or upgrade their package, if you're on a ****ty internet package and using a router from the dark ages of internet then don't be surprised if you have problems with the internet. Of course they shouldn't have a monopoly but thats just the way it is.
My KC broadband is fantastic at the point it comes into my main socket, but is bloody useless by the time it's run to the socket in my office where the router is, they've said they can sort it, but I keep not getting round to arranging it(my office is too far from the main socket for the wifi to reach, so I have to have it in the crap socket).
You could buy a cheap router and set it up as a bridge ? ie the main wifi signal is received by another router in a strategic position (i.e. closer to you) which then you connect to. I saw some software the other week you can download and put on a router to make it a bridge.
KC mentioned that they would boost the signal, so I suspect they plan to do something along the lines you're suggesting, as I'm on the top package they come and sort it for free, so I might as well leave it to them.
I have no problems with my Karoo. I still have the unlimited package i signed up for about 10 years ago. Wireless connection is great around the house, download speed is **** hot and Playstation streams brilliantly to the TV.
I have to laugh in a way when I see the discussions on these marvels of technology, we have TV, internet, a multitude of programmes, even overload I would suggest on practically every device available, be it tablet, phone or that old fashioned thing called a desktop PC. Sugar has done some good thing in the past, even if he was shafted by a certain American hard disc manufacturer so I don't think he has gone into this lightly. My point is, this box is only another evolution, but like floppy discs and eventually hdd's it will be superseded, anyone still got a VHS video recorder? And I think Sugar is right when he says when the price point becomes £99 it will seem a more attractive proposition. All I bother about is the quality of content ...... I have Sky and some of the programme's I happen to see beggar belief so much so I'm reminded of that Bruce Springsteen song .... 57 channels and nothing on ......... the trouble now is its more like 157 channels and nothing on.
I have phases were my internet connection keeps dropping off for a few minutes at the time but when it works, which it does the majority of the time, the speeds are fantastic and with a 100gb allowance to boot I'm very happy, nothing makes me laugh more than people wishing they could have BT of all companies. Would much prefer it if the fibre optic get's rolled out over here sharpish though
