I'd have to agree there Nos that a LOT of negative words have been directed at him. I best thing he's done is limit the social media...smart move.

True as you say but to be fair Rodwell's probably at the top of the list currently.
Believe it or not but a number do read this forum. An ex-player I know of used it to practice his English!
Whatever the background to any game Rodwell's name is the one that is mentioned most and normally in negative way when the team overall have done badly.
Well he is crap to be fair. I was specifically asking why it matters if one player gets picked on more than others on this forum, if they don't get booed at matches and are cheered as much as anyone when they do well.
Like I said on the Larsson thread, I think Rodwell is a better player than he is given credit for. On pure technical ability he is much better than several players in our squad, including several who are generally immune from criticism. Unlike those players, he rarely, if ever, delivers. As a result he is widely derided as"****", which simply isn't the case. I would imagine comments from the match day crowd, the media, and on social media can all have an effect on a player's confidence and form. However, it is up to the club to create the right kind of environment in which its players can reach peak performance. It may simply be that the conditions at Sunderland, as at Man City, don't suit Rodwell. In which case, he probably needs to leave. It may be something in his psychology that only he himself can address. Either way, the "Rodwell is ****" comments irritate me because they are too simplistic. Anyone who pays proper attention can see he has the potential to be a good player.
In turn it irritates me when people say "don't pick on Rodwell" because according to the stats he's better than he gets credit for. I know what a good, useful footballer looks like and it isn't Rodwell.
I've paid plenty of attention to him and he doesn't offer anywhere near enough to be a valuable player in this league. How old will he be before people like you accept that the supposed potential he shows isn't going to materialise, 30, 35? I don't appreciate being told that I don't pay attention because I don't rate the lad. Anyone with functioning eyesight can see he's useless at this level.
I didn't say don't pick on him. He's constantly out of form and never really imposes himself on games. I don't particularly think we should persist with him either- like I said, if there's something about the club that isn't bringing the best out of him then for everybody's sake he should probably move on.
Neither did I mention stats. Over the past couple of games he's played, I've seen him make 2 or 3 good tackles and hit some very good passes. If I've seen that then you must have seen it. I've also seen him not sustain that level of performance for any period of time.
Is he a massively frustrating player who never seems to play well or confidently? Yes. Is he a **** footballer? No. Is he good enough for the Premier League? Not unless someone can find some way of getting the best out of him.
When I say he's crap I mean by premier league standards, which he is. Obviously by pub league standards he's world class but that isn't what we're talking about is it. If we offered him for free in January would anyone in the prem take him off our hands? Maybe but only as uninspiring backup not as a first team player.
I mentioned stats because I've seen you make a case for him before with stats, not in this thread.
I think it's bullshit that some people on here won't allow criticism of players, in case the player in question reads it on here? I don't even know why it's an issue. If someone isn't good enough I'm not afraid to say so and you can talk about potential and scapegoating all you like, Rodwell isn't good enough for this league.
In the past when we have paid 10 million for a player I would expect that player to have an influence on the game for us in whatever position he plays. This just hasn't happened with him and in many games has been a liability. We are a club that cannot carry players. We need everyone on the pitch making something to happen for us. Maybe a change of club will work for him. It's all about results and they just haven't come with him playing for us. Strange but these things happen in football. Both parties need to move on hopefully in January.
Maybe its time for him to fully concentrate on just trying to turn himself into a cb. Forget other positions, he can't cut it, it seems.

I think it is bullshit not to criticise players too. I just the think the problem with Rodwell is more complicated than him just being ****. I'm not some massive Rodwell fan by the way, I just think he's an interesting case. When I used stats it was to compare him and Cattermole. I don't really get the love that Cattermole receives because I don't think he's very good. I'd argue that on pure ability alone, Rodwell is much better than Cattermole. Cattermole makes himself effective though, which Rodwell doesn't. I just find it interesting that one can make their most of their ability while the other can't. It makes me want to know why and its the same with other players who we've had who've been very talented but never or rarely produced. So my argument is, there is more to it than just Rodwell being ****.

Yes but match fitness is not only the physical side your mind needs to be right - his lack of self belief is obvious . Also Rodwell has come with a massive expectation price tag over him - he is NOT yet premier league match ready - imo he needs game time at a lower level in the feeder leagues.
But ... we need to focus on Hull now -another 6 pointer -we are well used to these but we rarely win them - time for change
Talented players who don't perform are simply bad players. Rodwell may well be talented, but I've seen nowt to justify us parting with all that money for him. I want to see him justify his place; not by being the best of a bad bunch, but by playing well irrespective of what's around him.
No doubt there's two aspects to making a good footballer. One is natural ability and the other is the application of that ability. But the second one of those is something that the club should be able to work on. We've had a number of very talented players recently who have struggled to apply their natural ability with us but have had no problems elsewhere; Giaccherini and Lens are too good examples.
If you look at Saracens rugby club, they do a huge amount of work on getting the right individuals to the club, in terms of their ability to fit in to the existing culture. Then they do a massive amount on team building and psychology and have an excellent success rate in getting players to exceed themselves. This is at a rugby club with a much smaller budget than a Premiership football club. These things never seem to have even been considered at SAFC judging by the success rates of signings and it really makes me wonder why
agree and believe the main difference between professional players is psychological '- with high confidence , self belief and assurance - skills and talent then flourish
Or vice versa?
