World Cup in Qatar next winter could have a huge impact on our domestic season next year. Because of the summer heat out there, it will take place in the winter. There'll be a month international break in November/December to accomodate it.

In order to finish our domestic season as usual in May to allow time for the playoffs, the proposals are to start the season early at the end of July and close it at the start of November for a month.

To hit the May finish target, that will mean the first 21 Championship games in the 14 weeks to the break plus Carabao cup games for the Championship clubs which could make it 24 games for some.

The WC should never have been awarded to Qatar for many reasons - this is only one of them.

Agree a total farce. The filthy lucre of money no more no less.

I also read last week Wenger has been commissioned by FIFA to report on the feasibility of a World Cup every two years and recommended it<doh>

Seems like most people in power have come out against it......

But that is before the money starts talking.

Hope common sense overrides greed but I'm not holding my breath.

Totally agree with Sparks' post. There is no sensible reason for the WC to be held in Qatar - apart from the money it will make already mega rich oil producing states. <doh>
 
It will probably not surprise anyone on here that I have no problem with the international game taking precedence over the club game. In my idealistic world, playing well for your club was a stepping stone to representing your country. Of course, money has ruined all of that and we're stuck with a game where business and greed overrides pride. Hey ho, I know I plough a lonely furrow on this subject.
So, whilst I have no problem with the domestic game having to be inconvenienced, I do have a huge problem with the finals being held in Qatar. That problem however is purely political.
As I alluded to earlier, this is very much my own idealistic view so please be gentle when shooting me down :emoticon-0100-smile

Clingo, everyone is entitled to their opinion and yours more than many is always very welcome and enjoyed by us all.

I actually see your argument as having some merit. International football could, in some respects still be classed as one of the "purer" forms of the game.
However, even that is now tainted by greed, corruption and bias towards the "greater" nations via seedings and so forth sadly.

Personally I prefer the spectacle and specialness the infrequency brings.

I think I can also safely say I am falling out of love with the game in general. Well, certainly at the professional level anyhow.

Love my club, love my country, dislike modern football!

Clingo - don't have a problem with normal international breaks other than they annoyingly disrupt the nitty gritty league stuff. <ok>

The current breaks are necessary to feed the qualifiers through into the European and World Cup finals - no other way to do it.

The whole point of the thread was why the need to play the upcoming WC finals in an extremely small football starved, though cash rich country that swelters in the heat in the usual summer months making the tournament unplayable at that time. The disruption that causes to historic national leagues around the globe is not justified. That was a rhetorical question because we all know the reason why.

Our own circumstances are amongst the worst given the size and intensity of the Engish League system, as most European countries have a 3/4 week winter break anyway.

I can remember all the great conversations with The Proph on the subject of international football and it's place. We never reached agreement because we were both starting from fundamentally opposite stand points. However, as with everyone on this board, respect was never lost either way. So thank you. I get hammered when I mention it elsewhere.

Have to agree with Brizzle about becoming increasingly disillusioned with the professional game at the top levels. My local teams are Forest Green Rovers and Cheltenham Town. These are two clubs trying hard to climb the ladder and it's great to see. However, I just fear what will happen to them as they progress. Sorry sparkey, I digressed.

In my idealistic world, clubs would still carry on playing while their stars were on international duty. Yes, I know that there would be attempts to stop the stars from playing for their country, but in my non corrupt world, ways could be found to obviate that. Of course, there is now no going back and football will probably have to implode before it gets better.

I should be a Rugby Union supporter <laugh>

As far as playing in the heat is concerned, it maybe something we have to get used to.

Club football always comes first for me.

Saying that though I used to love the Home International’s and WC qualifiers. I can recall the 1974 qualifier had just 3 teams with Wales being England & Poland. At that time the Euros was just a knock out for nations and friendlies were hardly if ever heard of. In short an international game back then was an event, a rarity and was to be relished. Now they’re ten a penny and frankly somewhat boring, especially the loathsome friendlies.

The oval ball equally in disarray regarding money, club over country etc.
Also Phil Steele has been dropped from punditry in the club game.
A more knowledgeable pwrson regarding the semi pro game you couldnt find.

Live rugby on sunday on s4c and bbc2 wales next friday.

No diving or feigning injury allowed.

Have to confess to enjoying the club games that I've been to but that was some time ago.
Of course, being a Welshman and living where I do, rugby is never far away.
I enjoy the occasional clubgame on the telly and of course the internationals.

Sorry sparkey. We've gone off piste again

Just watching wales ladies in welch BBC2.
10 mins gone and half a dozen decent chances for us.
Not sure how the ball has stayed out.
WC qualifier against Kazakhstan.
