Mark Hughes was overlooked for the last Premier League job that became available at Sunderland but history is unlikely to repeat itself after QPR became the second top tier club to dismiss their manager this season.
Goal.com understands that Hughes is the boardâs overwhelming first choice to succeed Neil Warnock after they acted upon their conviction that the 63-year-old was not the man to halt the slide towards relegation.
Gianfranco Zola, who has been out of work as a manager since being sacked by West Ham in May 2010, is also in the frame for the second London post of his coaching career.
However, it is believed to be Hughesâ job to lose should he convince the Premier League club during forthcoming negotiations that he is the safe pair of hands they need to steer them out of choppy waters.
The former Wales, Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers manager has not yet been officially contacted by QPR but is expected to hold talks with the west London club soon after his advisor Kia Joorabchian arrives back from Brazil, where he has been on family business, on Monday.
With QPR owner and chairman Tony Fernandes believed to have briefly returned to Malaysia after spending the weekend in London, a meeting with Hughes - the man who took Fulham to their second highest-ever Premier League finish last season before abruptly quitting - could be scheduled for Tuesday.
QPR chief executive Philip Beard said on Sunday that the club âplan to move very quicklyâ, and it is understood that an appointment will be made by the club before the end of this week.
Hughesâ availability, proven Premier League pedigree and experience of handling big names make him the outstanding candidate in the eyes of the board, who acted with ruthless speed after concluding that a run of six defeats and two draws in the Premier League could herald a return to the Championship.
He is said to be interested in the possibility of taking over a club where there is ownership stability and funds to spend in the transfer market.
Fernandes was busy defending his actions on Twitter tonight, explaining to supporters angered by the dismissal of the man who guided the club to promotion only eight months ago that âin 47 years of life I have never had to make such a tough decisionâ but the board âhad to think of the future of the clubâ.
It is believed there were doubts at the top of the club about Warnockâs ability to attract the players Rangers want, despite the signings of Joey Barton, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Anton Ferdinand and Armand Traore late in the August window in the immediate aftermath of Fernandesâ takeover.
Warnock had bids for Blackburn Roversâ Christopher Samba and Fulhamâs Andy Johnson rejected last week, while moves for Nedum Onuoha, James Collins and Bobby Zamora have also received a lukewarm response over the past few weeks.
Coincidence or not, Samba and Johnson both had some success playing under Hughes at Blackburn and Fulham respectively.
There was also some disquiet about Warnockâs tactics, with some within the club expressing their view that the Yorkshireman was too gung-ho and unable to shut up shop and sit on a lead. Rangers, who are 17th in the table and only a point above the relegation zone, have conceded 35 goals in 20 Premier League games this season.
Fernandes and his fellow directors feared that Rangers had begun a descent into the Championship and acted quickly to give the new man time to bring in players in the remaining days of the window.
Beard explained that time was not on the clubâs side and they want to give the new manager as many of the 23 days left in January as possible to recruit new players.
âWhat I will say is weâre going to move as quickly as we can and we hope to make an appointment very soon,â he said.
âTime is against everybody and weâre already in the second week of January. I think the reality is there are some funds there but weâve got to make the right purchases.
âIt is a tricky month to try and make things happen but our appetite is to bring one or two players in if we can to strengthen the squad and the new manager will be part of that as soon as we can identify him and spend time looking at some of our targets.â

All those punters that have backed steve keen to go have now been gazumped twice, first Bruce and now Warnock!
We're too small for Hughes anyway so we're hopefully dodge that one.

Mark Hughes will be installed as Queens Park Rangers manager this week after Neil Warnock was sacked on Sunday night.
Club supremo Tony Fernandes axed Warnock after agreeing a compensation package with the 63-year-old and his assistants Keith Curle and Mick Jones to end their 22-month stay at Loftus Road.
Owners Fernandes and Amit Bhatia have already reached a deal with Hughes to take over at the Barclays Premier League club, who lie a point above the relegation zone. The former Manchester United striker will be joined by his right-hand men Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki.
Fernandes is currently out of the country but will return to England before the end of the week to formalise Hughesâs appointment.
The Malaysian businessman views the Welshman as the perfect candidate to steady the ship. Despite his sacking as Manchester City manager in 2010, Hughes impressed Fernandes with his accomplishments in difficult circumstances. But it is his record with Blackburn, under financial constraints, that stands out for Fernandes.
Given his status as an Old Trafford legend, Hughes also fits the bill for Fernandesâ global marketing vision for the west London club.
Fernandes said: 'This decision has been made in the best interests of the club and I can assure everyone that this is not a decision that was made lightly. Sadly, our recent run of poor form has seen us slip alarmingly down the table and the board felt it was the right time to make a change.
Warnockâs side had picked up five points from a possible 33 and Sportsmail understands key members of the QPR board were due to meet on Thursday to discuss his position. But the clubâs 1-1 draw in the FA Cup third round against MK Dons on Saturday forced Fernandes to make a quick decision.
He is said to be âdeeply disappointedâ by QPRâs league position, particularly given the amount of money spent by Warnock in the summer to bring in the likes of Joey Barton, Anton Ferdinand, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Luke Young.
Furthermore, Fernandes has been unconvinced by a number of Warnockâs signings, feeling money could have been spent better elsewhere. The former Sheffield United boss was to be given between £15m-£20m to spend this month but Sportsmail revealed last week how Fernandes was having second thoughts on handing over the funds.
Instead, the businessman was keen for Warnock to explore the loan market for suitable signings and the only player they have brought in is Manchester United striker Federico Macheda.
Fernandes has taken a more prominent role in the recruitment of players this month and has been at the forefront of attempts to sign Manchester City misfit Wayne Bridge and Chelsea defender Alex.
The apparent breakdown in trust between the two men has now cost the former Crystal Palace boss his job. Talk of Hughesâs possible appointment was openly discussed by members of the playing staff, as was Fernandesâ apparent reluctance to hand over transfer funds to Warnock.

Hmm some of the names on here are grim,it's a pretty good bet it will be Hughes.I don't like the sound of Beard saying that whoever gets the job will have the chance to bring in 1 or 2 players,we need at least 5.Anyone think getting El Tel to come out of retirement would be a good move?

Mark Hughes for me. Good backroom staff, proven wherever hes been. Did superb with Fulham and would defiantly keep us up.
Would indeed be an inspired & popular choice - I'm sure the squad would respond positively to him and Harry would no doubt oblige with a few transfers. Sir Les could also personally demonstrate to our strikers how to put shots on target and score goals.
