You have to say, with the best will in the world, that looking to pick up a free striker, discarded from a club at the same level as ourselves, shows a dismal lack of ambition. I'm waiting to see how the last cards fall, but that is a real statement we will be looking at a quiet season here.
There has been talk about Freddie Ladapo again (he was mentioned a couple of months back). A decent player in my view, but is it just talk again to quieten fans down in the short term? But I don't know whether a deal for Sam Nombe of Exeter has been raised from the Dead. It could be a Nombe Apocaylpse
Well if the rumours about FFP rules and limits are to be believed, then we couldn’t afford to bring in either of these two. Maybe Ladapo on loan, but certainly neither of them as permanent signings as without an injection of funds from our owners, then surely we couldn’t afford their considerable wages without breaking the rules. Hence why we are looking at cheaper players ?
From what I've read elsewhere, FFP needn't come into the equation as the owners can make a loan or an equity arangement to inject cash into the club if they want to spend more money. All of which defeats the purpose of FFP, but that is for another day. So if we want to buy Ladapo from Ipswich, there are ways and means to so, and the same can be applied to other players - we certainly need to bring in more than one. However, that implied beginning to load more debt onto the club, and since quite a few fans were hoping to see the club set straight and run properly, it doesn't seem a good way to start. As most of us have no idea of how the new owners were planning to shape the squad in this window, it's all just chit chat anyway. But as the club has almosy no assets, loading it with debt isn't exactly how most businessmen would look at the way forward. The owners of man City and Newcastle clearly want to buy sucess and have money to do so, but again, our owners have made no such claims. In fact, they have avoided the stuff TS and Ducahatelt trumpeted about Premier in five years, so quite why there is so much expectation about big signings is a bit odd. Rome wasn't burnt in a day.
Because the fans were told that the new owners had money to spend on 4/5 Championship or top-end L1 players. That was clearly untrue. As to the FFP rules, an owner can’t load a club with debt in relation to players and player wages, as the rules don’t allow it. The cash injections, or donations as they’re more properly described, have to be interest free and with no obligation on the club to ever repay them.
Indeed. But many have believed that with new owners we would have the budget to but 4/5 Championship level or top end L1 level players, because of what they were told. That’s not unreasonable based on what they were told about the new owners. They have clearly been misled. Judging by what happened with season ticket sales after the new owners took over, I believe many fans parted with their money because of what they were fed. One could easily say “well more fool them” and I and others weren’t so duped, but that would be harsh. So I don’t think the “earth is flat” lie is really comparable for anyone alive today as there is irrefutable evidence to say otherwise.
Who was told and by whom? How many times have we been in this exact situation? - as I’ve said come the end of the window I’ll make my judgement- but I won’t be suicidal if it all goes Pete tong !
I don't know how rich they are, but they seem to be as tight as our lot. Unbelievable that they appear to be content to throw their Prem status away... Not that I care much
New signing on loan announced: Chem Campbell Looks a decent shout. And wrote 'Witchita Lineman' so musically laid back after the furey of Addicks to victory
