They spent £36,850,000 on transfer fees in the 2022/23 season according to Transfermarkt and made about £65,220,000 from selling players. Their most expensive players that season in terms of transfer fees were Foster and Al-Dakhil in January. In the summer, they made a few transfers in the £3-4 million range like Zaroury, Benson etc. They spent prudently that season. It was this season they spent loads on underwhelming players.

And they did play the best and most attractive football in the 2022/23 season, by far.

Syd talking through his hat again,

Perhaps the second season is colouring my perception, you're right, but I don't think doing well for a season in the Championship even if he did have them playing some amazing style is justification enough to get the Bayern job. Carrick for instance did a better job (I thought) at Boro with a lot less resources coming in mid-way through the season.

Carrick’s fell flat this season too though, in the same division. He couldn’t maintain the momentum. Kompany’s nowhere near the level to coach Bayern yet but I’d still rate him higher than Carrick.

I suppose that's my point that you can't just look at a single season in isolation. I thought Carrick was more impressive last season but both have failed to deliver this season. Kompany just did it in a more visible way which somehow makes him more marketable to Bayern? Lol go figure.

Well I’m sure that anyone concerned about a potential lack of relevant experience will be placated by hearing that they’ve at least found schools in the area…

Does mean there will be few more dry bedsheets this weekend?

I do think there's a valid point in here. I think Rooney has always been a popular joke figure even before he was a manager. When he got the Birmingham job he was mocked because it seemed a strange decision, perhaps fair enough. But then I think that pre-conceived notion of him being a joke who shouldn't be in the job didn't help him. People point to them being in the playoffs but it was after a handful of games, they were never going to be a playoff-chasing side really. It obviously didn't go well in the short time he got but I think it's unfair to judge anyone on such a short period. I think there's a good chance that he'd have kept them up and then might have been able to build them into something more over time like LR did with us.
His misdemeanours don't help him get taken seriously. That's his own fault. But the guy can coach apparently. His record at Birmingham has mitigating circumstances that some will choose to ignore.

You know how much many on here lauded McKenna , look what’s happening , he’s refused his new deal and is probably buggering off , That’s what happens when you achieve success you get opportunities you wouldn’t get otherwise , and the loyalty your fans expected goes out the window - and the world turns .

Or in an alternate view, he has given Ipswich probably their best 2 years for many a year, and now feels he'd like a go at a 'bigger' club, with better players, more financial clout, and a chance to get into Europe.... just a thought !

What were they supposed to do, bank the money for interest and play reserves? They lost loads of players when they went down due to expiring contracts and selling their best players like McNeil, Cornet, Pope and Nat Collins for 8-figure sums. Kompany had to pretty much build that squad from scratch. He had to sign all new centre-halves, wingers etc.

Considering he managed to sign players like Zaroury, Benson, Vitinho, Cullen, Murić for around £1-4 million each is really good business. We bought Sinik and Allahyar for similar fees ffs.

That Burnely recruitment was scattergun as **** though and they got away with it. Tried the same in the PL and fell on their arses. They've got a shed load of players too
