Managers are quite happy to go to clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and a number of German clubs where this is the case.
Isn’t that what any manager in any company would have to do? Especially if they’re brought in? I get that football is different as you can replace players easier than most. But from any clubs perspective it makes sense. You bring in playing staff that fit a certain ethos or playing method and you find the coach to help. In theory it prevents you hiring a manager him bringing in all his favoured players and it not working. You then have to hope for a new guy coming in to make best out of players he’s not familiar with. I think we are implementing it a bit poorly right now given the reliance of loans and so on but a lot of clubs make a Director of Football and Head coach work.
The OP said he couldn’t understand a manager working under those circumstances. Managers are quite happy to work under those circumstances for the clubs I mentioned. I never mentioned anyone turning down Real Madrid,
Not sure about your job but if I'm hiring someone that will report to me I'm involved in the interviews and the decision.
Yeah sorry I wasn’t clear. I meant that any incoming manager would have to make do with what’s there. Like anything I imagine the coach would give their input but it’s a collaborative effort now as opposed to the old fashioned manager makes all the transfers style
Typically managers coming in get to mould their own teams, not as drastically as in football where you can see wholesale changes within the space of a single window, but through natural attrition they can bring their own people in. Part of the interview process typically includes a couple of hours with the team, in some capacity, so both sides can make an educated guess as to whether it's a good fit. The undertone of some of Acun's comments suggested, on at least a couple of signings, they went against LR's opinion on some signings (which is their prerogative) but were then pissed when he still didn't use those players. If I was forced to work with certain people even if I didn't consider them the right people for the job, I'd be pretty pissed. If it turns out I was wrong, I'd have no qualms about falling on my sword (which is what LR ultimately did).
Just to separate this before I make my point owner with no experience in football making transfers and building teams = bad Director of Football and a correct structure making transfers and building teams = good Plenty clubs work with a head coach as opposed to a manager. Plenty clubs don’t. There’s pros and cons to both. For what it’s worth I agree with you about Acun’s comments if they are as suspected. Like you say it should be manager to pick the team regardless of owners preference. But I think a scouting team doing the transfer legwork is a good division of workforce
Regarding the latest on Walter: please log in to view this image Baz Cooper It won’t be this week but there’s nothing to be concerned about. Everybody very relaxed about the situation.
If anyone listened to Simon Jordan ex club owner discussing Chelsea he said that there is no way these days managers scout and pick players , it’s usually a team of about 5 having input and putting selections forward for the manager to decide . I think for the most part Acun did this with Tan and scouts / coaches involved, so he did nothing extraordinary - except maybe he wanted some well known Turkish players included to attract attention / profile , acceptance in his homeland, again nothing unreasonable there IMO
We don’t need a team. Just one to go have a look at the not606 recommendations. Get the coach to use them in the preferred not606 way and promotion is nailed on.
Neither would I, but that's not how it's done is it on the whole (bar pandor). It's more like you agreeing on a job spec, a recruitment team going out and finding candidates and then you getting the final say on who gets the job
The preferred not606 way of course being to argue about everything, insult each other and start going into politics. Not sure that’s going to get us promotion.
The preferred way of playing football, not the preferred way of not accepting a different viewpoint on anything else.
Acun didn’t think a manager had time to fly across Europe to watch a player 4-5 times. Which seems logical
I find it quite ironic that all of the German footy experts they've had on the various pods talking about Walter all mention that he picks his keeper based on thier footballing ability not as a keeper. So is Allsop number 1 again? Also loved the fact that the lad they got on 1904 club recently had done zero research on us as a club or even English football. At one point he said Walter like to play possession based football not the kick and rush the english play
Mind you if he’d called me I would have flown to Turkey for a few days 4or 5 times ! Belek would do , golf central .
