Mind you apart from probably not being able to afford him, would Bruce want to come down here anyway?

I read an interview of Bruce a couple of years back, ok maybe 10+ years ago, in which he said that 2 clubs he would love to manager 1 day would be Man U and the Gills. It was shown to me by a Norwich fan who couldn't believe he'd rather manage Gills over Norwich. But times change.
 
I would enjoy a larger name coming down to the club ala Curbishley or Bruce but I think the lowest they would go for is high league 1. The strongest manager we can probably employ is a manager who has failed at championship level and wants some successful limelight for his CV (e.g. Aidy Boothroyd) O'Driscoll could be the man, as could anyone! I won't say I had heard of Mark Stimson all that much before there were reported sightings of the bald one at Priestfield. One name that has been thrown on twitter is Steve Constantine who has reportedly applied.

On a somewhat different note, what sort of timescale does everyone think we are looking at for this appointment? Team meeting regarding contracts is tomorrow and Scally must be looking at a decent yet quick appointment to allow the manager a suitable amount of time for transfers etc.
 
Can't believe that Sean O'Driscoll hasn't had more of a mention, or maybe that's just me.

A young-ish manager who has knowledge of the lower leagues, it was documented that he went for the vacant job at Bristol Rovers earlier this year so we know he's perhaps willing to step down to L2. He worked wonders at Doncaster and was unfortunate to lose his job last season - his team caught the eye with the way they played football and personally would love to see him come down here.

Much like Boothroyd at Northampton, this is a project that I'm sure ambitious managers like SO'D would relish.

Gemini - well now is Bruce's chance to get his application in! I know I say some of this tongue in cheek but I've seen all the names and although as gillslad69 says he thinks the lowest they would go is league one, that is their job to get us there.

What worries me at this very instant in time is a quick fix. Come on PS you always come across to me with this ambition and talk big, now is your opportunity. I am not suggesting we cannot do it on the cheap, there are probably some good managers out there but nothing wrong in testing the situation with Bruce, a phone call is all it takes. Think season tickets - lol
 
I'm concerned that Scally will rush somebody in as he looks to sort out discussions with the out of contract players.

Remember what happened when Hess came in? He had to re-sign any players that had been released before his arrival.

I think any new manager needs a good couple of weeks to assess what he has to work with before he makes his decisions. Could be tricky for the likes of Jackman and Fuller who are loyal to the club but won't want their futures up in the air for too long.
 
Well I've just read that Scally will take his time on this one and Hess will have a say in the recruitment process (kick in the teeth much?). So I'm assuming that means that Hess and PS are going to be the ones renewing contracts which I'm afraid is dangerous ground; it's a precarious position signing a contract without knowing what role a manager wants you to play in the team if at all.

BRB, if we could get him I'd be over the moon and have to agree that if you don't ask, you won't get. The contacts he must have up the leagues are making me drool a tad.
 
yes id love bruce but are people being a bit 2 faced here saying they dont want allen cos he'll leave straight away for a better offer well surely bruce is likely to attract just such an offer if we start doing well prob from an under achieving champ or prem club and then he'd be off!

i think lee clark would be a good shout manager with some experience of the lower leagues, young and prob looking to get straight back into management
 
Also if a reasonably experienced manager is coming into the role would he be happy over Hess having a say with scouting and recruitment? When I saw PS say that he was offering Hess the role my initial thought was that he would bring Robson in, just because Hess' strong points were his compassion and some of the players he found but his tactics were off. So I thought he might bring in more of a coach to pick the team and decide the tactics and have a director of football for signings. I don't really like the sound of that too much and would prefer the likes of O'Driscoll coming into the role in full control, of course if we could get a Bruce or Curbs in I'd be over the moon still.
 
My biggest worry is that unless the manager has relatively instant success come Christmas there will be calls for his head. I do not like this one bit as I'm sure I have made opinions on this quite clear recently. A new manager is by no means a guarantee to success. I'd like to see someone given time. 5 years or so.
 
You say your'ed like a manager to be given 5 years or so, but with a club in the lower divisions, crowds will drop away if the team isn't successful, and then you're looking down at the conference. We're not a top premiership club where you will keep a huge fan base come what may. We rely on crowds and season ticket sales to keep going, and we'll only do that by success and/or hope of success.
 
I see no point in the cycle of hire manager - manager doesn't succeed instantly - fire manager - hire manager - manager doesn't succeed instantly - fire manager - and so on etc. nothing is ever achieved that way.
 
Are we on that cycle? Hess had 2 seasons to turn it around, with a squad many consider to be "too good" for L2... I am not sure that is a knee jerk reaction.
 
Looking around the web today (Sky,BBC etc) and betting sites Mark Robson is the clear favourite, would be disappointed especially with the other options out there.

I would think that these are possibilities: Allen, Robson, Ternent, Peacock, Tilson. That's just an initial brainstorm though.

Iagree dogg. MArtin allen wud be a great choice. look what he done at barnet - with the players they has - they were dropping like flies. he gives players confidence.

I sauid straight awawy to a mate last night who we should get allen. He doesn't have loyalt y to barnet as he's left them at the drop of a hat before.

Let's get him, and we're on the way up!!
 
two names that stand out most, are lee clark & steve bruce(good call brb), yet think these will not even be close to happening for us.

realistic call would be mark robson as stated and i'd be happy for him to come in, i just hope hessy comes back on board with the gills though?

have heard that scally will cut the budget this season, so maybe that will go along way to deciding who comes into gillingham fc ?!


just hope whoever it is that comes in, just doesn't want to take a look at richards, oli & lawrence before deciding on contracts <yikes>

Should the new manager finish any lower than 8th next season then there will be calls for him to go no doubt. There's no doubt Hess was afforded extra time by fans and the chairman due to his standing at the club. Would the new guy be afforded as much time?
