They were on offer at a tenner in the Newcastle club shop in the middle of Newcastle city centre. Might have been a few years back. Maybe wasn't Mike Ashley then because I think it was before 2007. It was a campaign by the club to make the Newcastle replica home shirt affordable to everyone in the region. It worked too, everywhere you went in Newcastle at that time looked like a herd of zebras. Google a bit further back then 2007 and you will see this to be true.

It won't have cost you quite that much, a Sherman shirt in the early 70's was a fiver, but you're right that the price of clothing has fallen in real terms over the years.
I think the thread title offers up some sort of clue as to the topic up for 'debate' under the heading 'NEW KIT' followed by a ? (As in,what's your thoughts)?
My thoughts are NO,I don't like it,I wouldn't buy it and I won't be buying it for any of my Grandkids!!! I don't like the set out of the stripes or the neck,I definitely don't like the makers logo, I question the omission of any sort of Tiger on it and I question the price irrespective of how much people pay for England kit,more fool them? In short I dislike it,I think it's a poor effort all round and it doesn't seem to have caught the eye of the majority of the fan base at this point.
But here's the crux of the matter....Just because I don't like it,I don't mind others who do and I certainly wouldn't advise others not to buy it.We are individuals,we have different views and preferences,one man's meat is another man's poison and for such a simplistic question on a 'NEW KIT' to develop into WWIII,is indicative of the pettiness prevalent in these threads at times.
One more question to anyone versed in Sponsorship, kit sales and branding.Why would our Club rush out an unsponsored Kit (if that is indeed the case)in the initial phase of a sale only to then provide a sponsorship logo in further batches?Surely the point of sponsorship and the sponsors primary goal is to push a particular brand to the public,not to suppress it in half the shirts and push it in the other half? I just don't get it,it's a bit like nipping into Fred Perry and paying £85 for a polo,only to find it doesn't have the logo on because the machinist was on holiday and they couldn't find anyone capable enough to work the machinery? Utterly Bizarre !!!!

You could also get a 'Ben Sherman' shirt in Cliff Dunns for a fiver at that time. They were 5hite and probably copies but they had the Ben Sherman label and the button down collars. He used to advertise them in the HDM with a full page ad and had them piled up in the shop, all awful colours but Ben Sherman's never the less. I was buying original Ben Shermans in 1970 from a shop on Carr Lane, I was earning £6 a week in 1970 and a shirt cost nearly a weeks wages, maybe even more, it wasn't something you could afford to buy every week. They were superb quality and you really felt as though you were special going out in a new Ben Sherman. The same brand today are absolute rubbish in comparison.
A notch up from Ben Shermans in 1970 for the skinhead/suedehead/mods was the Arthur Black shirts. Beautifully made shirts bought locally from a mens outfitters on Huntriss Row Scarbourgh, no shop in Hull had them. I believe Arthur Black was a mens outfitters in Glasgow and Glasgow Ric posted something about this famous shop a few months back?
On the wages comparison. I left an office job in late 1971 earning £6.50 a week, I was 18 and got a job the following Monday in the foundry at Ideal Standard, a world of difference I might add and my wage was over £20 a week. I felt like a millionaire.......then I met the missus.

Ideally it would all have come together from the off.
But I guess the sponsors must be ok with the early release, or the club feel that it won't be an issue for the sponsors.
The sponsors will be sponsoring us to get their name in front of the cameras to the massive world wide PL audience, rather than being too concerned about an initial batch of a few thousand (?) supporter's shirts.
Views on the shirt aside, I think it's a HUGE positive that shirts are already available when it's only 12th June. What a refreshing change that is. Almost like the club continues to learn from past mistakes.
Hopefully the rest of the offerings arrive soon and that the leisure wear is a vast improvement on the ****e we've had for far too long.

****ing state of this. Like the kit, or don't like the kit. Why the **** we need a several page meltdown kicking the **** out of the supplier? We've not even seen the shirt in the flesh
The last line seems to be the thing if Rovers are anything to go by. As well as the obvious team shirts there appears to be loads of other rovers stuff out there too, hoodies, coats and such.
Can't imagine they are doing thousands of those things so maybe they are able to do small runs of clothing easier than the big names.

Most people didn't need to buy 2 or 3 kids Ben Sherman shirts as well though at same time..
I had a few Ben Sherman's back in the day and you're right,they were very good quality,can't remember how much they were from memory.
Arthur Blacks were bespoke,much dearer and costed on what you wanted,what you wanted on it and even if you wanted your initials embroidered on it? The quality of Ben Sherman's nowadays is poor and you're better off buying a fake off some market stall as they seem more robust?
Digressing a bit here but I bought my first 'cherry reds' 72ish from Mallinsons in Driff and from memory I'm pretty certain they cost £7.50 (as I had to pay for them myself through potato picking earnings).

Iconic picture actually,they were striking Rolls Royce workers going on a March.
That was Gorbals Cross but Arthur Blacks ended up upstairs in a tenement block in St Enoch Square.The next property along housed Douglas Alexander the tailors where we all went for bespoke trousers and suits if you could afford one! I used to get trousers made,go in and pay the balance on them then nip up the next 'close' into Arthur Blacks and get my initials embroidered on the trouser pocket or waistband (25p a letter) and the lass did it while you waited....
A.C.A.B was a quid as were my initials C.U.N.T
