If you want to split hairs about UEFA recognition.

2006 - 07, was this the year that we won the InterToto Cup. Run by UEFA.

Our tour of Europe during that season included trips to far off places like Spain, Turkey, Holland, Germany etc.
Other parts of Europe yet to be seen by SAFC fans other than on TV, probably watching NUFC when they get the chance.

Intertoto Cup? Isn't that the one where there are about 8 different winners? I'm sure it is. Which other clubs won that year, I bet they are all huge household names?! Did the Intertoto Cup not involve a solitary trip abroad to Norway?

Got to be in it to win it, mate.
One simple question, were Sunderland ever in it or at any time the UEFA Cup, Champions League or the Europa League.

I'll save you the time by answering for you.

NO, NO, NO. NO on all accounts.

To be fair, to here some of your fans last week, you would have been over the moon to have won the UEFA non-sanctioned Asia Cup.

You are quite right, we have been **** for many a year. I'm sure we too would be proud to 'win' such illustrious competitions.

I wish we were on a par with such great clubs as Tobol, Ethnikos Achna, Ferencvaros, Ujpest etc.

Both clubs have been S*** for too long, and its about time both were in the top 6 - 8 competing every season.
I don't want to see the Mancs/ Scousers / Cockneys up there all the time.
Good local completion is good for both of us.

You have no right to qualify to talk about European clubs seeing as you've never had an interest in it. You're making yourself out to be a bigger tit than you are. (Probably).

(Ferencvaros have actually played in the group stages of the Champions league you thick twat!)

By that logic, neither of us are on a par with such luminaries as Ipswich Town or Nottm Forest....

You gotta love the Mackem jealousy of our European escapades. I can't blame them though, they are special nights to be involved in.

I'm still struggling with their logic or, for that matter, their point?

1) We've won the same number of league titles when involved in the same competition
2) We've both won fck all for years
3) NUFC have won more cups
4) NUFC have won a European trophy, SAFC have not

There's too much else that explains categorically why NUFC are a bigger club with a richer history, I don't get it? It's like a City fan trying to argue his team's somehow better than United.

Here's one for you - look up the european exploits of Newcastle and Sunderland on wikipedia. NUFC have a page (18 appearances in Europe). Sunderland have one line for their 2nd round exit back in 1973/74. "Second round? WTF?" I hear you cry - yep, they managed to get through the first round by beating Hungarian giants Vasas Budapest.

Go on, work it out.

Ok, let's give it a go....

With the same access to European competition, Newcastle United have managed to qualify for European competition around 18 times. In the same period of time, Sunderland have managed to qualify for European competition...once.

The summary I'd like to apply here goes thusly - Newcastle, with overwhelming consistency, have achieved much, much more by way of both trophy wins and by league placement in the wonderful world of football than Sunderland. I would go further and suggest that in terms of every conceivable measurement that can be taken into account (success, support, wealth, history, squad value, league placement, and so on) Newcastle are a 'better' club than Sunderland in the eyes of everyone except, of course, a mackem.

I'm not so sure it is jealousy.

I think its more than that and they are actually Envious of us.

Envy : is a resentment which "occurs when someone lacks another's quality, achievement or possession and wishes that the other lacked it."[1]

I think that one word sums up everything that Indestructible is trying to argue without any rational reasoning.

What? 6 is more than 4. 'When involved in the same competition'? So, we might not have won them if a team not good enough to be in the top league had been in there?

I'm not getting involved in this bigger both horse ****, we are both big clubs, and I couldn't give a fannies fart that the Toon (I always, openly admit) are a little bigger.

Success is measured in league titles though, every top manager says this, so on that score, sucks my Mackem, 6 league title winning balls.

The European trophy you won was a tournament teams that allowed and encouraged trade fairs in theor city were invited to. Not exactly the CL, I'm sure you'll agree.

I openly admit, as a final point, my jealousy and/or envy of your recent European trips.

<ok>

By that logic, the number of European trophies they have won when we are both in the same competition is, wait for it...0. <whistle>

Since when has logic been a factor amongst us two ???

The way both clubs go on its like we have both dominated English football lol.

We have joe kinnear they ain't end of debate.
