I think dear old Roy is suffering from something that trick-cyclists call "transference." It's when the person being bullied and humiliated begins to identify with his tormentor as a ploy to stop the torment. Yes. I suppose that, unfortunately, they're very accustomed to being royally ****ed. So, being ****ed over by somebody other than the Czars or the Bolsheviks, is nothing more than a change of scenery for most of their people. As you say, it's high time they got far better.
Whether a whole people 'deserve' anything is a debate none can win, but ditching Gorbachev for Yeltsin started the current process and they voted for that.
From memory, Yeltsin was considered the lesser of two evils, at the time. The alternative being a threatened military takeover by the old regime.
