I think dear old Roy is suffering from something that trick-cyclists call "transference." It's when the person being bullied and humiliated begins to identify with his tormentor as a ploy to stop the torment. It's as though his having been bullied and humiliated by the likes of Gerrard and Co., the poor bastard is trying to be mates with them. They failed him the first time round, and they will do so again. There can be absolutely no justification for half the England team being made of 'Pool's donkeys.

Yes. I suppose that, unfortunately, they're very accustomed to being royally ****ed. So, being ****ed over by somebody other than the Czars or the Bolsheviks, is nothing more than a change of scenery for most of their people. As you say, it's high time they got far better.
Whether a whole people 'deserve' anything is a debate none can win, but ditching Gorbachev for Yeltsin started the current process and they voted for that.
From memory, Yeltsin was considered the lesser of two evils, at the time. The alternative being a threatened military takeover by the old regime.
