Southampton rivalry with Man Utd? Never heard of that one either. Pompey for sure but nobody else that I've ever been aware of. What is this dislike supposed to be based on? It certainly isn't based on location, there must be over 200 miles between them! Need explanation.
As explained, it is merely the traditional dislike that exists between one club's fans and another, nothing more. Let's face it we choose our home clubs to support, not someone elses that we absolutely no connection with, don't we..?
But why Man United? We don't dislike you. I don't mean to sound arrogant, but we are indifferent to Southampton.
No, it's no your club particularly. If you read further up the thread you'll get my personal idea of how I see other clubs - basically I don't, full stop. They don't even register, so how can I dislike them. However, I do believe I'm not the typical fan.
That's fair enough. Personally I only dislike a few teams, but they are traditional rivals eg Liverpool, Man City and Leeds.
No you're clearly not and it's good of you to offer this explaination but my query was aimed at the bloke who ever so wittily referred to us as 'Manure' in his early post. I mean, genuine here, we shouldn't be classed as your rivals. You aren't ours so I see no reason for this.
Phil Thompson - can't stand the man. Talks absolute drivel and still believes liverpool have a God given right to be at the top of the table. That said, I've disliked Liverpool for years because they won everything in the 70s and 80s, half the kids at school supported them (annoying when you live in London) and i wasn't overly impressed with losing to them in a a cup match once when we should have won really. I suspect most people have a team which are not their "traditional" rivals that they cannot stand.
It's sad when fans of teams who have no rivalry with United hate us so much. It's almost as if they do so because they feel it validates them as a club, as though they become bigger due to some imagined beef with United (I'm not saying this is the case every time BTW). I work with someone from Stoke and apparently, Port Vale aside, they see us as their biggest rivals. They have Facebook groups about us and everything. There's a knob-head Arsenal fan on here who calls United "scum" all the time, and refers to United fans as gloryhunters and bandwagon jumpers. Even though he's from Wales and started supporting Arsenal when they became successful under Wenger
Don't like Jamie Redknapp, anyone notice that he always frowns? i also don't like Robbie Savage, apart from boasting on twitter about all the nice stuff he owns his voice just grates on me.Adrian Chiles has one emotion and that's it,everything he says is in one tone and he's so dreary, dunno why itv went for him, clueless! Don't really like many pundits actually, although i find ray wilkins quite likeable, afterall he is the brother of our coach haha.Merson makes me laugh but i also find him dispectful when he can't be bothered to do some research and find out how players names are pronounced, especially Lallana! Now this is gonna be controversial but i don't like le god as a pundit, find he really annoys me,he's always bloody eating as well!
Now, that is silly! However, I do believe that Man United are disliked because of their fans and I don't mean any disrespect to anyone by saying that. They are also always the team to beat - every team in England would love to beat Man United because it's Man United (most successful and probably still the best team in England in terms of quality etc), simple as, I think that fuels it.
I asked the same thing of this Arsenal fan and he couldn't really answer. Just something about United fans thinking we're superior.
There are plenty of reasons why a neutral would hate Man U. The feeling doesn't have to be reciprocal for it to be a valid viewpoint, and it's one I can understand 100%.
Unfortunately, I think some of our own bandwagon-type "fans" don't do us any favours in this respect. The ones who wear a Man United shirt in a pub in the middle of Hampshire or Surrey, shout at the telly and lord it over other fans, but actually know very little about United or football in general.
This exactly - i've had the unfortunate experience on more than one occasion of being in a pub in the middle of Southampton, watching a Southampton away match with other Southampton fans whilst a small group of Man United fans gloat away in the background - I'm sure this happens to many other fans in many other cities/towns around the UK.
The only reason people hate Man Utd is jealousy? There's also the history, present and doubtless future of odious scum players and management, the corporatism of the club, the exploitation and handling of the Munich disaster, the clueless fans who still think Beckham and C Ronaldo play for them - as well as those Jip Jaap mentioned, the poaching of players, the hypocrisy of their fans, the horrible accent and manner of the Mancunians, the club's unscrupulous willingness to form a breakaway Super League in the 1990s which would benefit the so-called Big Five corporately-favoured clubs, and of course Man Utd's indulgence in sky-high transfer fees which has helped to launch their modern success and ruin the game of football for the matchgoing fan. Can't say I'm overly jealous of fans who support a club with that sort of shameful record.
