We were elected to the football league (division 3 south) in 1950. 1. Who were the other team that gained promotion with us ? 2. Who were the teams who finished bottom of division 3, and were saved from relegation by the increase from 22 to 24 teams.
I seem to remember having a chat about this with one of the old guys in the bookies the other day. Colchester went up with you, he hates them with a passion. And Palace finished bottom. He was ranting about how they 'cheated' and stayed in the league because it was fixed Don't know the other teams though. Sorry
You are right with Colchester being the other team promoted in 1950. Crystal palace and Watford were in the relegation spots in 1951. It was Millwall and Newport county who escaped relegation in 1950 when we were elected. As an aside, in eight seasons in division 3 south, we were in the bottom 4 in five of them.
Here's an easy one for you folks. Which Gills former manager holds a unqiue 'first' in the whole football league. Can safely say that it never has been done since, nor will it ever be done again.
Not sure what you're looking for, there is William Groombridge who was the first Gillingham manager, that has never been done since, and won't ever be done again.
I didn't make that very clear did I, he was our first manager, but also the first known football manager (secretary)
The answer to my question The person I am looking for is a much later manager for you, but he did something that was a 'first' while with another club.
"With another club" gave the game away (I think) Keith Peacock was the first substitute in the football league whilst playing for Charlton. I was looking for something that happened whilst manager of Gillingham.
Apology to Resurgam ! I know you won't give me any point ( none deserved ) - but I DID know that it was the first sub - - although I had forgotten exactly who ! --- and I couldn't be bothered to Google (( at least it avoided my momentary need to strangle grumpygit when I found out his answer re Lovell Athletic ))....................... ................. apathy rules !
I'm pretty sure you are old enough to remember Lovell's sweets, and I don't mean the modern one that started in the late eighties and has gone already. As for Sir Keith, no Gillingham fan who lived during the eighties could possible forget him, some of the best football ever seen at Priesfield, I think Charlton was the only professional club he ever played for.
I must admit to a few expletives when I realised the answer was Lovell Athletic, I admit to cheating because it was only him and me, and he was doing my nut in
Some years ago before players earned mega money, it was common for works teams to be in the league and do well.
Here's a trickier one for you then. We all know (well some of us do) that Denis Compton played football for Arsenal as well as cricket for England. Ian botham also did, although playing for scunthorpe. BUT, who once played in the F.A cup final at Wembley, and then played in the Rugby League cup final 10 days later? Happy googling
A question especially for Resurgam. now there is a good clue. The Premier League, Championship, League One, League Two, Conference, Conference south, FA Cup, League Cup, Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, Scottish League Cup, Europa League and Champions League... which striker has scored in ALL of these competitions?
That's easy. Gary Hooper ( I hope). Just a shame it never really worked for him with us. Have you thought of an answer for my question yet @grumpygit?
quite simply no, I don't know the answer, I'm guessing it has to be a long time ago. I will have to google it and see what comes up.
