Working hard is part of it, but unless you grasp the concepts and basic fundamental principals you won't enjoy it or find it easy.Is Engineering really difficult? I have a friend who's doing it in Oxford next year. He's the most hardworking guy I know though, so he'll be fine.
I have to say you are right in that regard, a maths degree will open up more doors than you can imagine. The lack of real math skills is shocking

I find it ridiculous how easy GCSE Maths is. It's so incredibly basic, yet it's all so many people ever do.

Maths is just a language. How many people find French or Spanish difficult.

True. I feel some people just don't seem to try with Maths though. They just seem to have the mindset that they can't do it and just give up before they've even begun.
