First half we played some good stuff early. We looked confident and were giving it a right go against Millwall, pinning them in their own half for much of the first 20 minutes. We then started to force the issue a bit, hooking the ball long too quickly instead of playing through the lines like we had been at the start of the match.
Second half was completely different. Poor clearances and more long ball football had us continually under the cosh as we failed to retain any meaningful possession. Millwall got a boost from the penalty and started coming at us with new confidence. Spence screwed up by giving away a needless corner and that was a shame because I thought I might actually be able to write something positive about him today after some attacking efforts in the first 45. How Donacien isn't getting a look in I don't know. Pennington had a nightmare for the third, passing it back to Gerken when he should've just cleared it. One of those moments when you should punt it long. Gerken's kicks were atrocious again and cost possession a few times.
The positives are the young lads. Downes, Bish, Kenlock (even though he lost the ball a lot in the second half it was because he was trying to do the right things) and Lankester all played well for the most part. Lankester was guilty of holding on to the ball too long sometimes but he was really positive and drove forwards on a number of occasions. If we can keep hold of these lads they will all do well in League One, Evans will more than likely cash in on any that are worth more than a sack of spuds though. Jackson and Harrison will be alright at that level too.
Negatives are a terrible defence, Chambers and Spence need replacing, a 'keeper who can't kick and referees who just aren't up to the task.
Lambert eventually went two up top with 15 to go and was even encouraging Gerken to get up for a corner with 4 minutes extra time left. Too little too late though.
