He has stepped up, but previous criticism was warranted. He had been our squads weak link for quite a while. It is really nice to see him finally reach Southampton's current level.

Agreed with all comments. Maya is a fantastic professional, always available & never gives management problems (team mates, not so much <laugh> only kidding Maya!)
He's certainly much more suited to a CB role & with more play time, good man management, which Puel seems to be providing, I too think that maybe, maybe we do have a future 1st team CB replacement awaiting ? Maybe Les & Black Box have got it right again ? <party>

I always liked Maya...always willing, despite not many chances at first. Unlike some fans, I never worried when he played....despite waiting for the Maya moment :) Every player has one....the difference is that Jose and Virgil are usually forgiven, whereas fans memorised every one of Maya's. He has performed well this season...possibly due to the manager trusting him and using him...or possibly the system suits him better.

Puel has said that they have been coaching and developing him and it is clearly paying off.

Well, he's now in his FIFTH season with us, four managers ... so he's obviously doing something right :)

I've always liked him, and most of his mistakes come when the dutch twat played him out of position. Thankfully Claude knows better and played Stephens there over Yoshida.

Imagine if we hadn't signed Maya and had persisted with Jos, God love him, during our first season back in the Premier League. Would we have even stayed up?

Bloody hell those years have gone quick.

That's almost testimonial terroritory here these days <laugh>

Have always liked Maya.
Yes he has made errors, but unlike other players that also make errors, his had the unfortunate tendency to end up in the net.
Some of his defending, in the Europa, has been top notch, and at times better than VVD, getting across behind him to block runs/shots etc, and win challenges.
