Michael Collins: Apollo 11 pilot and 'loneliest man ever' dies aged 90 | New Scientist

Michael Collins (and Buzz Aldrin, for that matter) disagree, and are/were at least two of the Astronaut Corp who strongly advocated Mars next. Others, such as Lovell, Armstrong and Cernan prompted the moon as a staging post for the rest of the solar system. Looks like it'll be the moon again first, then Mars and beyond. But they have been saying that since I was in junior school.

That's a great picture

It certainly captures the imagination. Now where shall we go first.

To think the James Webb telescope goes up in October this year and it's a 100 times more powerful. I just hope we like what we see, because it's going to uncover mysteries like never before.

Just hope the rocket sending it up is not the biggest expensive failure ever.

I'm guessing whatever is out there is about as intelligent as us humans, and cannot transport its species very far. Now whether that is a good thing or not is to be seen, as it depends on the massive risk factor of whether they want to befriend, destroy or eat us, or maybe all three. <laugh>

Not just that, but the thought of the sheer size of the milky way and all our planets and the distances between them... and then you look at that picture and each of those shining bright lights is one of those in what appears such small focal points. Crazyness trying to get yout head round that. And that's just one 2D rectangle of space captured on camera.

When I was young I used to lay in bed at night thinking about it in amazement and I'm still the same sometimes .As BRB said hopefully,, this new one will blow the mind

Shows us how insignificant we are really....zero respect for the planet with reside on

I'd be amazed if humans thought themselves significant, we are but a mere spec of dust and even that is being generous. A black hole could devour us and leave no trace we ever existed.

Is this new telescope operational from October ?

I don't know mate. I think it was originally meant to of gone up in March, I'm guessing October is the next earliest window of opportunity. As for being operational, I expect it will have to go through operational tests to start with, much like the Mars helicopter before it was allowed to fly.
