Like the idea of running but am knackered climbing the stairs these days
It sounds like you're pretty unfit from the way you describe yourself.
Best advice, start slowly - don't overdo it. If necessary, start with a fast walk. Move on to short jogs as you walk - maybe 1 min or so. As you gain fitness, slowly increase the running and reduce the walking.
Oh, and I don't know your age, but a quick checkover by your doctor might be a good idea before you start.
Depending on his age and condition I recommend just a a two mile walk at medium pace maybe two times a week and maybe a trip to the swimming pool but start by doing what you are comfortable with. Lots of people try to run before they can walk and this often puts people off quickly. Couple that with a 50% reduction in your alcohol intake and avoid take aways and fried food. In a month you will start to see results and feel fitter.

whoever that medal previously belonged to obviously didn't take any care with it ...is that verdigris? ... looks like it might have been nestling at the bottom of somebody's sock drawer for a decade ...which, coincidentally might strengthen your case ...
PS I've never questioned whether you ran it or not btw. Firstly, because I'm not bothered either way and secondly... because my principle is to never trust a bloke that would welch out of a bet ...I really wouldn't trust you on anything.
