Andre Villas-Boas (remember him?) has called on FIFA to have every club retire the number 10 shirt in a tribute to Maradona.
Would it not be more fitting to have their groundsmen remove all the white lines instead?

For pity's sake <doh>

If Napoli and his home Club in Argentina want to name their grounds after him, then fine.
But AVB must have flipped his lid.

I've been in favour of letting the crowds back into the stadiums for a good while- it's open air and with a bit of carefully control should be much less hazardous than a pub or restaurant, though getting them there and home afterwards would be a problem. But every now and then, you see the Maradona funeral, the Liverpool celebration , and it makes it harder to justify. And while grief is a terrible thing, the scene's yesterday were just daft.
There were similar outpourings in N Ireland when George Best and Alex Higgins died, their weakness was alcohol Maradona's was Cocaine. They all had something in common, call it weakness or vulnerability, but Gascoigne is of the same ilk, but touch wood his addiction is under control. Even the great Jock Stein had a gambling problem. People warm to vulnerability.

They repeated the “When Lineker Met Maradona” documentary last night.

The two abiding impressions were that Maradona undoubtedly loved football & knew a lot about the game , and that he was surrounded by plenty of hangers on in his life.

Lineker questioned Maradona about the hand of God goal, & DM justified it by saying that handball and ‘anything goes’ was part and parcel of football in South America. Unfortunately Lineker lacked the journalistic skills to press him further on this, and moved to his customary default positions of smugness and self regard (“I remember how I felt when I saw your goal, I wanted to applaud :emoticon-0132-envy:).

Four personal pronouns in one sentence must be a record, even for Lineker.

I think this 'Maradona fever' is getting a bit excessive.

Many great footballers have died recently.
Many men who were true gentlemen as well as great players. Men who brought up families, worked hard and were respected by their communities. Men who didn't sort kilos of coke up their noses or drink themselves blind or fall in with criminals.

Those men seem to be forgotten within a day.
I'm not saying Maradona's football genius should not be acknowledged.
But turning the guy into some modern kind of Saint is getting things out of proportion now.

Careful, you will be called a dick & a cock for expressing such views.

Probably.

But who sets a better example for decent behaviour throughout his life as well as outstanding football achievement;
Nobby Stiles?
Bobby Charlton?
Diego Maradona?

These days 'Genius' appears to be amplified and lauded even more if it is obvously badly flawed.
That's an unhealthy way to remember people in my view.

It's being reported that no fewer than 16 members of Maradona's family are squabbling over his money.

Didn't the guy make a will?
