Sunderland's Vito Mannone 'outstanding' at Everton, says Gus Poyet
Sunderland manager Gus Poyet praised his goalkeeper Vito Mannone after the 1-0 victory at Everton

Vito Mannone performed heroically as Everton sought an equaliser
Gus Poyet described goalkeeper Vito Mannone as “outstanding” after he helped Sunderland hang on to a crucial victory at Everton.
The visitors’ goal from a Ki Seung-Yueng penalty followed a dreadful mix-up between Tim Howard and Leon Osman which resulted in the goalkeeper bringing down Ki in the box. Howard was shown a red card.
In contrast, Mannone performed heroically as Everton pressed in vain for an equaliser to preserve their unbeaten home league record in 2013. The Italian made two incredible saves in the second half from Bryan Oviedo and substitute, Ross Barkley.
“Sometimes strikers get all the credit, but sometimes you need a goalkeeper to win you a game and today Vito probably won the game for us,” said Poyet, the Sunderland manager. “He was outstanding.”
Poyet admitted his side had been given a huge slice of luck with the goal.

“Football is incredible,” he said. “You never know what’s going to happen. We had a plan to make it difficult for Everton. Everything changed with the mistake, you cannot plan that. Sometimes I like games without accident. That was one for us and we took advantage.”
With results in their favour, Everton could have gone top of the Premier League, albeit for two hours before the end of Manchester City’s match with Liverpool.
Roberto Martínez, the Everton manager, expressed “delight” at the attitude of his players after falling behind.
“I thought the second half was terrific,” he said. “We coped well with 10 men, put Mannone under great pressure. We didn’t get the points but performances like that will give us a lot more over the season.
“Our reaction was good, players showed incredible attitude and a great understanding to cope with a man disadvantage. My only critical aspect can have is should finish some of those chances. We will move on and I feel we’re stronger than before the game.”
Had it not been for Mannone, Everton would surely have rescued at least a point. “Even with 10 we were defending for our lives.” Poyet added. “It’s easy to see but very difficult to change. This is the best team we have played, even with just 10 men. I hope this time that it is the moment our season changes.”

Did he distribute the same way at hull? Did you play it out from the back? Because that's what I've loved about him most, he's like an extra outfield player.

Vito was great for us at Hull City. Always liked his distribution which was accurate and quick. Real sorry we missed out on him. Nice fella too, apparently he likes living by the coast, it reminds him of home.

Vito Mannone is confident Sunderland can become only the second team in Premier League history to escape relegation after being bottom of the table at Christmas.

The former Arsenal reserve goalkeeper kept his third successive clean sheet in the league as Gus Poyet's team won 1-0 at Everton on Boxing Day and hopes to complete a fourth at Cardiff on Saturday evening.

"I'm really happy now because I've got the chance to play and that's all I've been searching for for years," said Mannone, who has impressed since replacing the injured Ireland international Keiren Westwood in Sunderland's goal. "I've never had a manager who believes in me like Mr Poyet. Finally I've got a good manager who understands me and I want to push on. The more clean sheets that come the happier but I need to work really hard, keep concentration and make important saves.

"It's a big responsibility because you are fighting for this club and also for the fans, for yourself, for your team-mates and everyone. But I don't believe that the club which is bottom at Christmas will always go down. We need to believe, because when you do you can make crazy things happen and win against big clubs."

Sunderland's problem this season has been that, although they have beaten Everton, Manchester City and Newcastle United in the Premier League as well as Chelsea in the Capital One Cup, they routinely struggle against supposedly lesser sides.

If they are to emulate West Bromwich Albion's feat in 2004-05 and survive despite being rooted to the bottom of the division on Christmas Day this needs to change quickly.

"Cardiff is another massive game for us that could take us to 16 points before new year," said Mannone. "That's where we wanted to be after the bad situation we had at the start of the season but we haven't achieved anything yet. We have to focus for another massive game and start beating the teams around us."

The lad had a good game but let's nip this in the bud before it becomes carved in 606 stone.

He had half a dozen shots to deal with and I, for one, would've been a bit disappointed if he'd let one of those in.

Only the free kick had a right to beat him and that was the one excellent save.

To say he had a 'once in a lifetime game' or 'a world class performance' is absolute bollocks.

Having said that, it should help his development and confidence <ok>

would still like to see cesar come in

I think he commands his box as good as any I've seen for some time and is a massive presence between the sticks. He pulled off some huge saves yesterday and with arun in the team has certainly improved massively.

I was a little sceptical about his signing initially but he has convinced me he is a decent keeper and not just a third choice Arsenal back up keeper. We do need back up here though if Westwood requires an operation as Pickford is very inexperienced. Not sure who is available though who is happy to come as a back up?

I particularly like his distribution which was always the migs downfall
