From what I have seen of modern action films there's little sign of a story. Especially those written by the director. All they seem to have is a series of visual set pieces in lieu of a plot.

The flip side of this though is that I embarrass my daughter and nieces when a 61-year-old man has uncontrollable fits of hysterical laughter watching the original 60's Pink Panther cartoons (especially the desert island one with the castaway and the dog) and the 1940s Tom and Jerry. Oh, and Johnny Bravo.

My kids watch those Marvel films... They are so dumb... They are what happens when a generation of kids grow up watching other people play videogames on YouTube. Nothing needs to have a plot or any sense of realism anymore. Crappy computer graphics and ridiculous fight scenes that are boring computer generated flicks are all you need to entertain the teens these days.
There is a story running through the films which is worth watching, the problem is the films are made out of order.
