So now the lad is saying he wanted to stay but safc would not pay him what he believed he was worth. IIRC He was sold for 1.5m. Meanwhile we pay somewhere between 2.5 to 3m rising to 4m ( if we get to premier league ) for grigg. I recall ross being sick as a chip insinuating it was all out of his hands. And donald says we should be queuing up to buy richard hill a drink for all the good work he has done I have major misgivings that hill, coton and Donald are up to their respective jobs going forward
Firstly I don't believe him, where did he say that? Secondly, should we always simply pay players whatever they think they're worth? Finally, should we admire someone who touts himself around during a vital season for a club that had looked after him?
I've a feeling that his agents perception of his worth was rising drastically with every goal he scored. I've no doubt the goalposts on the deal were moving everytime he scored.
Just read it and I don't believe him tbh. He's describing his current club as a stepping stone which tells you a lot. TBH this thread seems like just another excuse to have a pop at Donald and the club
They can't both be telling the truth and I see no reason whatsoever to believe Maja's version over Donald's.
I have a different recollection. I've only watched one of Donald's podcasts, the one right after Maja left. Donald claimed Ross told him that Maja wasn't worth a really large pay packet. Ross probably felt like some folks on here at the time - that Maja's overall contribution, other than scoring goals, was insufficient. I thought he was a great finisher but more than a bit lazy. In the end there really was no saga. The french side offerred Maja something like 8x what Donald did. FFP and those lingering Premier League contracts.
But ultimately we didn't go up and were a much poorer team after he left. If he had stayed and stayed fit, I think we'd have finished top 2 comfortably.
Maja leaving was hugely disruptive, those who questioned his worth to Sunderland erred in their judgement, and compounded this ten fold by their choice of replacement. We are still paying the cost of this mistake, and will do so until we find an adequate attacking alternative. The search goes on.
Didn't Donald say they'd offered the agent everything hed asked for? So someone's fibbing. And, personally speaking, I'd have been gobsmacked if maja, in his breakthrough season, could have kept up that finishing ratio for much longer.
You're probably right about that but even if his form did drop off he'd still have scored enough to take us up imo. It was a close thing as it was, don't know how we nearly managed it without any goals from our forwards.
I question the word saga it’s over and a longtime ago at that, he has not played a full 90 mins for Bordeaux, he will be a free transfer in the next couple of seasons they got money and then spent it on grigg who had a proven record at this level. Not the scouts, owners or manager of the time fault that grigg has failed to deliver. That’s down to grigg
He was offered a fabulous wage for this level of football, but he wanted far more.. It just couldn't be done.
Basically give me more money Or I will leave you and find another stepping stone club Because I’m going to be a big star. Maybe this
