Yes, they are the only ones with information at the very start, which is why my usual strategy is to do nothing until the town gets an opportunity to discover information
Right now if we put innocent people up for lynch the mafia don't have to do anything to win
If we refuse to just murder each other the mafia have to actually play the game

I think he is suggesting we sit it out until the detectives can tell us something. For the detectives to be able to tell us something, they need to have either found all three Mafia (possibly four) or the Mafia have used all three actions.
Or people who think it'll be really boring to do nothing for the next week
Depends on what you enjoy. When you play footy some people prefer to score own goals and shoot from the halfway line because it's less "boring" than winning with good play and tactics.

the tactic is no lynch is until the detectives have found all three (or four if the mafia recruit) names, so probably a while longer than three days. It's pretty much guaranteed to win, but would be boring. I know I've probably made myself look guilty as hell by going all out against this, but that's not why I play mafia, personally.

Well yes, giving up on the strategy part-way through would be problematic for us. And stupid. It does require the strategy to be done to the end. That said, once the mafia actions are used up, the detectives can come out and start dispensing their knowledge. And it should then pretty quickly become clear who can be trusted and who (if anyone) can't.
