I agree and his tackling was good when he was with us.

I disagree on the whole settling for poor players Jimmy put out there, you rarely have a team of 11 superstars and functional players who can do a job week after week are the core of any team and imo Lucas comes into that category. Play him in the Mascherano role and put a more talented player like Can next to him and they'll both do a great job.

I agree that you can't have a 11 superstars - successful teams have a number of functional players. Lucas is functional - but that's not to say he's a very good functional player. He's average.

Mascherano and Scott Parker are both functional players who play the same position - but one is clearly better than the other.

JS what are you on about? Lucas's style of play has always been the antipathy of Mascherano's. As for Parker well he doesn't figure anywy!

I'm talking about how we need better quality players. Lucas is a DM, and not a good one.

We had one of the world's best in Mascherano but yet we want to settle for Lucas?

Whilst the playing styles of Mash and Lucas are not similar, they are both still tasked with protecting the defence.

Lucas is a good DM - he just goes about his task in ways that don't appeal to you. That's the true difference. Sure Masch was good at what he did but was always an accident waiting to happen.

Is a different style of DM. As for a better DM then I don't know. Certainly Lucas has more of a career in front of him than Masch. Therefore I wouldn't resign Masch to replace Lucas.

Mascherano is 10x the DM Lucas is. There is simply no comparison regardless of style.

And no one mentioned re-signing Mascherano. It's about highlighting the gulf in class/ability we once had compared to what we have today.

No but they are similar types of players, Masc does have a better range of passing but both foul and tackle without a care as that's what they do. IMO a fit Lucas and he is getting there is a solid player to have in the team, there are not many out there who do that role well. Factor in that he loves being at Liverpool and will always give his all and that equals a very good player to have.

a good player to have on the bench but we need a mascherano esque player starting to improve. enough of this building for the future bollocks. our policy regarding transfers should by now be first team quality with players aged 23-30. ready made mancini did this and it worked for him (sort of)

We've had a gulf in class to other teams for more than 20 years now, players like Balotelli, Borini, Aspas, Skrtel, Johnson all need replacing getting rid of a solid very good player like Lucas would be daft when there are genuinely poor players like the ones listed.

No Masch was never 10x the better DM. That statement is just plain stupid.

I mentioned re-signing in relation to my accurate statement that Lucas had more of his career in front of him than Masch.

Anyway who wants a player (no matter how good) that doesn't want your team?

I agree, we have enough youngsters and anyone signed should be a quality player but I just don't think a DM is a priority Lucas is good enough and the young lad Ojo looks like he's on the bench as cover for him.
