Blimey even Sweden coming onboard!! It seems Aberdeen, that the general concensus amongst a lot of countrys is support for the Libya action!

Not that my opinion counts, norway, but it certainly doesn't get my support. To quote Bertrand Russell, "War doesn't determine who's right, just who's left." - and there is no justification for this one. Our government's public face in regard to this one - outrage over the cruel treatment of his own people by Gaddafi - simply doesn't ring true given the other similar but ignored instances of this. What does ring true is British attempts to safeguard its (or more to the point, BP's) investments.

Investments are obviously more important to the government than its people. That was brought home to me in no uncertain terms when my cousin and his family, British, but who owned a small coffee plantation in Zimbabwe, simply disappeared off the face of the earth a few years ago. Not a peep from our government.

Still don't know what happened to them.

    Totally agree Bolton.

I am sure we all hope there is no massacre of people by Gaddafi - but that does not justify the UK getting involved in another country's civil disturbance - whatever Libya's oil contribution 2% 3% or whatever - it is oil and BP that make our government take action - otherwise we would have taken action in Burma, Zimbabwe and the rest.

Size certainly doesn't matter in this instance <laugh>

What does matter is the fact that Libya's oil industry is nationalised, therefore under government control. If/when the government falls - to the invader the spoils.

Yes there was a lot of atrocities committed in Zimbabwe a lot of people displaced (if they were lucky) and killed ! From one of the richest nations in Africa to one of the poorest!

I always think with these things that we only get the chance to really evaluate the rights and wrongs with the benefit of many years' hindsight. That said, two things strike me:
    i) Are we going in because of atrocities or the 5% of world's oil supply?
ii) If it's because of the atrocities, and I appreciate the necessity to act quickly on such matters, aren't we 60 odd years to late to stop atrocity in Tibet (not typically famed for its oil reserves)?

Have been discussing the events on a reg basis with a guy I work with who is Libyan and comes from Benghazi. He has obviously been deeply concerned as many people have been killed, tortured, robbed and worse.
He believes a political solution is the only answer and he thinks/hopes that Gadaffi will go soon and then people will start to work together in the country. Let's hope so.

On the world political front.. yes very disgruntled that the so called free world countries are so selective about what they "support" or not.

What I've discussed in Libya is the removal of the push forces which cause people to want to leave. We can have a secure and happy world with a high quality of life if we provide the right economic stimulus and opportunity in the source countries. Hopefully if the right people do manage to take power in the country it can become very rich indeed with fantastic opportunity for all Libyans and the significant migrant workforce that Libya already sustains.
The big issue in world stability is to take away the corruption and uneven playing field that currently exists so that African, Eastern and South american economies can provide the same opportunities as the West. As to wheree we intervene it should trend to nowhere in the future but and this is the big one, that would lead in a massive decline in the international arms trade and guess who really runs the EU and USA!!!!

Without the arms industry and associated hi tech industries there would be a lot more people on the dole in the states and europe! Plus war does spur on innovation and technology! especially in aviation!! Dont get me wrong ,Iraq was a war , Libya (at the minute is not)! What is of more concern is the spreading of unrest across more arabic nations!

It's pretty sorry indictment of the human race if we need to kill people to create employment and innovation.

You would have thought that maybe we could come up with industires that actually help the planet that we can use to create wealth, innovation and employment. If not developing green technologies then even space or deep sea exploration would be better alternatives.

Sorry alien leader didn't see much else as when started to move scope up M1 found horrifying ****hole with orange jets flying in and out. Recommend destruction of orange place and invest planets resource into the place called WATFORD
