I wouldn't have been overly disappointed if we had signed him.. in fact I would have been quite pleased, but that said £2-3 million is a big wedge for someone who has been more miss than hit for the past 7 years. Particularly when you consider he has had one 'good' season in which his stock has risen rapidly.
That said some players just need the right environment to flourish having been bang average for a few years and suddenly everything clicks for them. Grant Holt being an example so could be just what player and club need right now, though I'd say the price tag muddies it a little but if he gets you back up then it will be money well spent.
i don't know too much about the guy but its surely harsh to say he's only had one good season - he's netted 56 goals in the last 3 seasons. that's prolific, especially given he played quite a lot of the time on the wing before last season. i would also say that a fee of around £3m (if that is what we paid - many outlets seem to say we've paid less than his buyout clause of £3m) then that sounds about right for a striker who scored 20+ goals in the championship and hasn't reached peak age. i'm sure if david mcgoldrick, who seems a fairly good comparison, was to be signed you'd be looking for more than £3m.
at the end of the day, one of city's main weaknesses has been a lack of pace up front. that is now sorted and we haven't broken the bank like we would had we gone for the ludicrously overpriced rhodes.
