I wouldn't have been overly disappointed if we had signed him.. in fact I would have been quite pleased, but that said £2-3 million is a big wedge for someone who has been more miss than hit for the past 7 years. Particularly when you consider he has had one 'good' season in which his stock has risen rapidly.

That said some players just need the right environment to flourish having been bang average for a few years and suddenly everything clicks for them. Grant Holt being an example so could be just what player and club need right now, though I'd say the price tag muddies it a little but if he gets you back up then it will be money well spent.

i don't know too much about the guy but its surely harsh to say he's only had one good season - he's netted 56 goals in the last 3 seasons. that's prolific, especially given he played quite a lot of the time on the wing before last season. i would also say that a fee of around £3m (if that is what we paid - many outlets seem to say we've paid less than his buyout clause of £3m) then that sounds about right for a striker who scored 20+ goals in the championship and hasn't reached peak age. i'm sure if david mcgoldrick, who seems a fairly good comparison, was to be signed you'd be looking for more than £3m.

at the end of the day, one of city's main weaknesses has been a lack of pace up front. that is now sorted and we haven't broken the bank like we would had we gone for the ludicrously overpriced rhodes.

Confirmed and updated on wiki already. Number 9 shirt, according to them - sounds ominous for the current owner of that shirt, RvW <yikes>

(It's Grabban, b t w <ok>)

He played in the 9 shirt for Bournemouth I think that just hadn't been updated. Can't see it on there now.

Adams said this doesn't affect Hooper or RVW's position clearly thus move was to bring us back to 4 senior strikers.

Except the binners who persist in their vision of RvW as ****! <doh>

to be fair, i doubt its just them who think he's ****e because they'll look at how much he cost and his one goal.

the club gave him the big fanfare welcome and hyped him up when in reality the club never suited his style. i thought signing him was an indication that our style would develop to suit his but it never materialised.

he's certainly not a ****e footballer - he's a very, very good striker, we were just the wrong club, at the wrong time, playing the wrong system. had he not got injured at the start of the season and taken (and scored) that penalty against villa, i really think we'd have seen a different player. i saw a fair bit of him when he was in portugal and more so in the netherlands and we did him no favours during his time here. none at all. i'd love to keep him here because i think he'd bang in the goals in the championship but i think that ship will sail unfortunately

Think it all depends on how big his wages are and how big his ego is.

In football is £2-3m a lot of money I'm genuinely not sure anymore. Isn't that the going rate for a decent championship player or maybe actually a bit cheaper If Rhodes is worth £12m, he's not, but in that context it's a steal

i answered their points sensibly but reading back both those ipswich posts earlier, they do come across rather...

"i wouldn't have been overly disappointed"

"more miss than hit for 7 years"

"one good season"

"the price tag muddies the deal"

"i only saw him once but he didn't excite me"

...bitter! <laugh>

grabban, age 26, 22 goals in 44 games - valued £2.5m - £3m
rhodes, age 24, 25 goals in 46 games - valued £12m - 14m

rhodes is more pricey because a) he's performed at championship level for two years, b) he's an international and c) he's a bigger name but even so, his asking price is crazy! £6m and i think we'd be talking about a possible deal

Not bad!!!!!!

Well, Johnson has a similar highlight video, and we know what he's like from range! <laugh>

Sorry Clint, the title was originally spelt Grabben, but moderators can edit titles so I corrected the spelling, hence the confusion.

As to the player, I don't see £3m as being overpriced?

He was the 4th highest scorer in the league last season. McCormack I'm sure I've seen linked to teams for around £6m, Rhodes in second has a ludicrous price tag, then Deeney and Grabban in third and fourth would probably command similar price tags. The next highest scoring player who didn't get promoted (or is Chris Martin) is Craig Bryson (who whilst impressive, isn't a striker), then Chris O'Grady (who appears set to move for £500k, but from a relegated team). Much lower than that and you're looking at players who scored half as many.

DH, how did you edit the title without leaving a footprint?

I was sure it was "Grabben" originally, but when I went to correct it, you'd already done it!

Pass, I'm presuming if you do it from the forum page rather than the thread page, it doesn't register as an edit? If you click slightly to the right of the end of a title, it makes the title editable. It can be a bit awkward to click in the right place not to open the thread, but that's how I've always edited titles!

I didn't know you could do that, I've always gone into the thread, go advanced then edit the title and it's always shown that I've edited it! <ok>

It's interesting to see what Adams has said about Grabban:

City boss Neil Adams added: "I am delighted that Lewis has put pen to paper to become my first signing. He will provide pace, intelligent movement and a high work ethic to the front line, and of course he showed in the Championship last season that he is capable of scoring a variety of different goals. Lewis possesses precisely the type of attitude, application and quality that I expect from my players, and I am really looking forward to integrating him into the squad."

Sounds good to me.

Pretty pleased about this one - liked grabban for a while - he certainly knows where the goal is and his game has come along a lot in past few seasons - keep going neil, you've put a football related smile on my face for the first in a long old while!

We are still light years ahead of you know who and they are now running scared.

This signing is a marker and statement of intent to return to the PL swiftly.
