Still as clear as mud but it seems the major obstacle has been cleared. Personal terms should see him earn £15m (€17.7m) p/a with us while Barca want him to further cut wages to €5m p/a so it seems like no brainer once he gets the €17m he's owed - which we seem to have just paid

This clubs had agreed the transfer months ago. So no surprise there. The only problem was the money owed to the player by Barcelona. The president saying they want to keep him was a complete red herring to pretend that it’s the player who wants to leave and therefore should forfeit the £17m due to him.

Barcelona have shown themselves to be a bunch of ****s. If I were DeJong I would insist on staying at their **** club, get the 17m owed, and scupper all their plans to get new players .
That’s what I didn’t consider before. I believe Chief mentioned that earlier too that you can’t blame the player for insisting that he wants to stay. Why would anyone forgo €17m? But surely he must be seriously considering leaving the sht club that operates with no dignity.
He shouldn't have to ask for an transfer though, it just plays into their hands. He's been hung out to dry.

At the end of the day we must have had positive dialogue with the player otherwise we wouldn't be ****ing around. The only stumbling block to the transfer is the deferred wages due to the player - we will sign him, he isn't a reluctant want away signing, he knows the manager and the manager knows him - that's why we're after him. If FdJ wasn't interested we would have signed an alternative target long ago but he has to keep up the 'love barca' to try and get his money. EtH doesn't strike me as anyone's fool - he knows the player wants to join the project.
The real problem is that Barca isn't just about football - the basketball side of the coin is massive - something that really surprised me when I moved here, the basketball scene nationally is massive. In addition they own TV companies, shopping malls, hotels and have a massive retail holding. Back in the day they would shift cash between all these entities to make it look like they were big business but since FFP it has proved impossible for them to play the same old trick. They have been found out and have had to sell TV rights and offload their merchandising and retail arm just to keep afloat having suffered massive losses due to zero match day receipts during the pandemic. Until the revenues from those sales come through in September they are literally living hand to mouth. Were the banks to call in their debt barca would be history

2) Was his agreement on the basis that for him to receive his wages he'd have to be playing for the club the following 2 years? Now THAT would be daft because surely the £17m he's owed would be for services rendered in the previous 2 years. For him to not have that in the agreement is, I'm afraid, naive on his part.

That post says it all… there’s definitely more to this than player not wanting to join. There’s more at stake beyond football. So they are left with posturing.

It is understood that Barcelona’s hierarchy have informed De Jong that they need to sell him in order to balance their excessive wage bill, which has led to complications in registering their new signings like Raphinha.
Barcelona are trying to convince De Jong that a transfer to United would be the best move for his career and while they believe he is a talented player, it has come down to an economically related decision rather than a sporting one.
However, the situation is also being complicated by Barcelona owing De Jong a deferred salary payment worth €17million from which is still stalling the deal.
Barcelona’s financial situation means De Jong’s future has been hanging in the balance, with debts of £1billion and strict controls on recruitment and expenditure.
Wtf. Barcelona are really in the ****. They need the ****ing transfer money. Yet they can’t afford to pay him the money owed to him. They need Utd to rescue them. Why should we be ****ing involved at all?

All United and De Jong have to do is hold their stance. This can only go one way. Barca will buckle.
I'd say it's a game of who blinks first, but tbh there really is no pressure on anyone but Barca here.
At least it has been put out there loud and clear that, if this falls through, it won't be on us. Neves is a good alternative given that we will be signing Martinez as our defensive midfield.
He plays both positions very well and is progressive in both too.
I've been wondering how we're going to play any two of De Jong, Eriksen, and Fernandes with no defensive midfielder.
