Like i said, Martinez is the only one that shows any real passion but not sure if he can instill this into others as a captain/leader.

I meant in each position of the pitch.

In defence you have the likes of Shaw, AWB, Maguire all needing a leader and I agree that's Martinez.

In midfield you have Mainoo, Pellistri, McTominay, Mount all needing a leader. Maybe Mount can be the one who eventually develops into that role?

In attack Hojlund, Rashford, Antony, Garnacho, even Bruno, all needing a leader. I can't see one there at the moment.

We also need a leader in the technical area too. I don't like to see a manager just sitting in the dugout, contemplating or making notes for half time. look at Pep, always prowling, always barking instructions, always vocal and animated - the players pick up on that and react. Ole was the worst, hardly ever present on the touchline, and ETH is just as bad. If the players need to look to someone for a kick up the arse or a bit of encouragement the manager needs to be be there for them.

I don't really see ten Hag as that passive. He's in the tech area fairly often by my reckoning.

Not really saying we've turned a corner at all, and we could well revert to type later today given we're away, but I didn't see a toxic team in the second half v Villa.

As said, today is a big game. Win it and we can genuinely move on.

We certainly don’t want ETH to turn into Arteta. I could slap that face!

But ETH needs to be more proactive at getting instructions to players. Players don’t simply just figure things out. They need direction from the touch lines.

So transfer window is open.

Good news, Van De Beek is off on loan to Frankfurt <ok>

Martial will either be sold or gone come the end of June anyway so we're in for another striker apparently.

And also Varane's contract extension has not been triggered (deadline was yesterday) so he can leave at the end of the season or renegotiate. We're in for Todibo as another CB anyway.

He seems to be highly rated. A bit of a late bloomer but seems decent enough. My only concern is that I'd prefer a more proven CF. Why aren't we in for Toney?

If anyone wants to know what a professional looks like they should listen to this.

Treated like **** by the club and sidelined by some managers including Ole.

If nothing else, watch near the end from 1:02:00 to 1:03:15 and you see what playing for the club meant to him and the fact he didn't want to leave.

Btw this was done a year ago so a few yrs after he left and look at how much it still affects him.

Compare that to ****s like Martial.

Good question, I don't know.

He seems the obvious target to me. We should be in there before someone else does.

Watched that a few times. I always admired him as a player, on and off the pitch, he always gave his all for the club, and to this day I have no idea why we let him go. He left a big hole in our squad, one that I don't think the club realised until he had gone.

So we've extended Lindelof's contract, yet we won't extend Varane's unless he agrees to reduced terms. Not sure about that one, but at least VDB has gone which leaves space on the bench for sulky Rashford.

I didn't realise or I'd forgotten he was player of the season the year we won the Europa and League Cup.

Agree he was a top CM and worked his socks off. Was he sidelined bcos of Pogba? I can't remember, bloody shocking if he was.

I think it's the right move regarding Varane. He hardly plays. It's worth bringing down the wage bill and bringing in a solid CB.

That then gives us Martinez, Maguire, Todiba hopefully, and Lindelof. Add to that Kambwala who showed promise in his debut.

I think the club want to keep Varane but want to negotiate his wages down considerably from his current £350k per week, hence they aren't extending the contract which would have meant paying those same wages.

Seems like some proactive movement by the club. VDB gone, Reguilon returned to sender and Sancho looks set to be shipped back to Germany, where he will shine and star for England during the Euros. AWB has had his contract extended and talks with Varane over new terms are reportedly progressing well. If we can sign Olise and consign Antony to the bin, plus add a second striker, with all the injured players returning this could yet be a productive January.

Olise , if it happens, won't be until the summer.

It's looking unlikely we'll be signing anyone in January. Maybe a striker on loan and that's it (let's hope it's not Weghorst again :bandit:)
