I dont care what that stupid git LM of London is doing, Leeds City Council do not more want people in their City. Every single road blocked off and you have to find a new route, which Sat Nav hasn't caught up on, there must be more scaffolding in Leeds than the rest of the country, these orange plastic fences and metal railings, and of course, cones and cones... not just in the City but the M621 too... what a **** hole...

Bizarrely Like Having To Drive Through The Gates Of Armley Jail Being The Gateway Of Leeds City Centre - All The Pedestrianisation People Daily Are From Armley Jail - I"m Pretty Sure.
 
Leeds City Council want as many people as possible in the city centre, they just don't want them to come in their cars. They have been actively dissuading people from using cars for years, they doubled the parking charges, reduced the number of spaces and did everything they could to increase the use of public transport. It was fairly successful, the numbers staying in the city centre to eat and drink on a night increased significantly.

Used to work in Leeds city centre around 20 years ago just at it started to go mad with building and roadworks. Didn’t have satnav then so bought an A-Z street map. Bought it on Monday but out of date by Friday.
 
Leeds city centre shows how you create a night time economy with people staying after work to eat and drink .On the other hand Hull is absolutely dead in the city centre come the five o clock bell .
 
As a resident (sadly) I wouldn't mind if the public transport options were good and plentiful, but the buses and trains to and from the (even)****(ter) southern end are absolutely shocking especially after 6.30 in the evening
 
Ha, i was there a few years ago for a weekend. Thought it was a great city - bars, restaurants, pubs, shops etc taxis were so cheap, was never need for public transport.

Maybe changed since then!
 
I haven’t been in Leeds city centre for years ( at least 15) but my other half went a few months ago.

Absolutely hated it.

She reckons Greek Street?? is full of ****ers. Loads of Peaky Blinder wannabes and overly tanned bald men in tight white shirts and half mast trousers( no socks) with veins sticking out of their heads.

Think ‘Ladies Day’ at Beverley races.

Think I’ll give that a swerve.

i've worked in leeds city centre and was at university there. i have no great love for the place. using the twice-a-year hdm/northern rail offers i did visit the place in late 2019 for the first time in many years - probably 20 or more. i hated what they'd done to the town centre. every building seems to be getting another 20 floors plonked on top and a load of new mutli-storey buildings had sprung up with no common style themes and many looked like inelegant crap. the changes to the railway station were unpleasant. i have likened the work they've been doing to the city centre to someone trying to improve a manure heap by getting people to vomit on it. i couldn't believe how utterly horrid it was. come 5:30 and the queues at bus stops all needed thirty buses to relieve them, and all roads in the city centre turned into car parks. no danger of being hit by a vehicle at any time from 5:30 until at least 6:30 since no vehicles were moving.

the one area of improvement was the canal area around the railway station. the shops that used to be in the area under the railway station were long gone, and i found myself having difficulty navigating the place and trying to find shops i was once familar with.

the thought occurred to me that the place had become london-on-aire. not nice.

It’ll be really nice when it’s finished. Far too many cars in the city centre, out of towners mainly.
 
Thanks for this thread - I have to drive into Leeds City Centre on Saturday for the first time in over 20 years. This is exactly what I didn't want to hear!
 
I live and work in Leeds. Love the place. Easier to get in and out of than hull by a mile. There is development happening around the city that makes it difficult from the m621, but via York road it’s fine. Just come off the m62 at at the a1 junction and come in via garforth.
It’s a vibrant city, loads to do and great people (despite the rumours on here).

Sorry, and amazing beer, loads of breweries, pubs etc. I’m never quite sure where the negative image comes from. Possibly a lack of insider knowledge.

I’m sure hull gets the same from outsiders, but what a place when you get to know it!!

Her mistake was going to Greek Street, complaining about the people there is like going out to eat and complaining that there aren’t enough fine dining options at St Andrews Quay.

Greek Street is great, it keeps all the local bellends and tourists in one place so the rest of us can enjoy the city centre.

There’s so many good places in Leeds city centre, it’s a shame she missed them.

Fully agree, I came here for university and never intended to stay longer than that but more than 15 years later I’m still here. Leeds, especially the city centre has developed beyond recognition in that time.

I love Hull and would defend it to the death if it was criticised by an outsider but I can’t see myself ever moving back. I walked through Hull city centre a few months ago on a Saturday evening and it felt like being back in Covid times, the place was deserted.

Hull has come a long way in the years since I left, but it’s so far behind other cities, it just doesn’t have the job prospects or wages to attract and retain the people it needs to drive it forward.
