You pick an @ name and a username in addition to giving your normal details. These can be what you want and the two names people will see on your account., many people use their full name.
If you want you use this Twitter account in a professional capacity for networking and what not, I'd set up a second, not using your full name, for stuff you'll air casual opinions on and what not.

That promotes it to your followers, kind of spreading the word. So if you retweet something, it will come up on my twitter feed that you have retweeted it and i can see the details of what you've retweeted. It's how things begin to trend and spread. It's why Sky Sports are last to know. Things like transfer links spread like wildfire.
So, if you said something that I liked and I thought other people should know, then retweet?

no. If you tweet me, your followers can see it on their twitter feed, but not my followers, but if I respond it opens it up my followers twitter feed too. If you want to give yourself a massive platform, use a hashtag. Say you want to comment on a transfer link. your comment alone would only be visible to your followers on their twitter feed, or somebody would have to manually seek out you profile and go to your tweets. but use the comment and have the hash tag [HASHTAG]#safc[/HASHTAG] in the tweet, it will go onto the [HASHTAG]#safc[/HASHTAG] twitter feed.
You can find that by simply searching [HASHTAG]#safc[/HASHTAG] then click live to see the all the tweets coming in real time.

Remember, unless you set your account to private, anyone can view you profile and your tweet history. Just they have to access it manually
