This is all true, and it's certainly a reason why I like him as a player and as our captain, but for me the 2 most important things are this:
1) Nolan wants to be a legend. He's a player who understands what it means to play for us, understands that unless you're in a top 4 side (and sometimes even then) you will not experience support like ours! He has seen the way we respond to players who respon to us. Rob Lee, Pav, Keegan, Super Mac, Tino, Les Ferdinand, Ginola, "ALBERT OOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!" - All players who've come here and achieved legendary status! He wants that, and that's why he will always give his all for us!
2) Nolan knows he isn't the best. Don't get me wrong, he is clearly a good player, his goalscoring record is unreal, but he knows others are better than him. He understands that at some point he will get dropped and he has simply said he will give his all for the club until his all isn't good enough, then he will move on. That is so refreshing to hear. None of this 'sitting on my arse, collecting my wages' or 'kicking up a fuss 'cause I'm not getting played'.
I hope he has many a year left in our team. If he can continue on 10-15 goals a season then surely he should keep his place!?!?
This is what Alan Pardew said today about his captain:
ââ¬ÅHe is better than I thought he was,ââ¬Â ââ¬ÅTechnically he is more accomplished than I gave him credit for. Maybe thatââ¬â¢s because of Boltonââ¬â¢s style when he was there.ââ¬Â
ââ¬ÅHe is as important to us as those players are for their teams,ââ¬Â ââ¬ÅHe has a knack of getting a goal. ââ¬ÅHe just pops up and scores ââ¬â all types of goals ââ¬â which is unusual for a central midfield player.ââ¬Â
ââ¬ÅHe is technically sound in everything he does.ââ¬Â ââ¬ÅHe sets the right example as captain on and off the pitch. His behavior in the Andy Carroll situation, when Andy was perhaps losing his way a bit, was important.ââ¬Â
ââ¬ÅThings like that make him a great leader. He keeps an even keel. The signing of Cheick is a boost for Kev, he has good energy and gives Kevin the license to get in the box.ââ¬Â
