Okay so it's safe to say that the majority of us are far from thrilled with our new Director of Football. However he's here now so as usual him, Pardew and the club will need our continued support. So let's look at the facts:
Kinnear's record as our manager reads Played 24, Won 5, Drawn 10, Lost 9. A win ratio of 21%. Hardly inspiring stuff, but the fact remains he's not our manager, he's our Director of Football so his managerial record with us becomes irrelevant.
His main remit is to bring the best possible players to SJP and his record in this area is okay.
He signed Nolan, R Taylor and Lovenkrands for a combined 6 million. I would class all three as above average signings, especially Nolan and Taylor. Under his reign we sold N'Zogbia & Given. For me Given would have left at the end of that season anyway plus we had Harper and Krul so we had plenty of depth in that area, that sale made sense. As for N'Zogbia it was clear he wanted out, yes Kinnear got his name wrong but Sir Bobby did this with players on a daily basis and nobody batted an eyelid. N'Zogbia blew it all out of proportion just to engineer a move.
Another job Kinnear has apparently been tasked with is to develop our style of play. Again I think the majority of us would agree that at best we could have been described as 'ugly' to watch last season. So given that performance wise our style of play couldn't get any worse from last season he can surely only help in this area. Or at worst make no improvement, as frankly we were hideous on the eye.
Again like him or not he's also passionate and old school so you'll know he'll give the job 100% effort. Now I'm not saying I agree with the appointment, just that it can't do us any harm. Quite a few of us have been calling for british players to be signed, well two of the three players he brought to the club were british and all three had experience of british football.
I'm just saying that it's obvious (for whatever reason) that Pardew needed help at times last season. He's now got that with Kinnear, only time will tell if that help proves good enough but for the time being we have to once again get behind Pardew, Kinnear, Ashley Llambias if we want to give our club the best possible chance of achieving their/our goals.
I've calmed down a bit now and I'm simply taking the view that given how bad we were last season this move can only do more good than harm. As for Pardew and Kinnear and their relationship, well I'm sure they both feel somewhat lucky/privileged to have the jobs that they do so I'm sure they'll do their best to make it work. I mean let's face it, Pardew will never again manage a club as big as us again and Kinnear is probably at his last ever football club, they both have no choice but to make it work, they're both passionate and do actually share some similar personallity traits (both are slightly arrogant). It could even work when you actually sit down and look at the facts.
