If Johnson puts the block on the JD deal he is digging his own grave with the fans. It’s worth signing him just for the lift it would give the whole club.
If Johnson agrees to the signing of a player that doesn’t improve us he’s digging his own grave. Young Defoe clearly would. Almost 40 Defoe may not. We need the best possible striker whoever that is.

We are not Manchester Utd and Defoe is not Ronaldo.

However it does seem that the return of an ageing star has not been wholly successful. Mainly because an older player is not as good as he used to be and thus has upset tactics and dressing room harmony for the team as a whole. Just something to bear in mind.

I love Defoe. Loved Defoe in his last spell but worry like Ronaldo that this spell is more about sentiment. I’d prefer a player with pace and energy to play our pressing game better, as well as goals of course. I honestly don’t know if Defoe can still do that but if he can’t they shouldn’t sign him, whatever pressure they’re under from sentimental fans.

I don’t think we will bring another striker in. I reckon we are going to stick with our current striking options - Stewart, O’Brien, Dajaku and Kimpioka - and wait for Broadhead to come back. The problem with that is a) will he come back as expected in March and b) will he stay fit until the end of the season?
It’s a massive risk

I think O’Brien will go and a loan will come in. Kimpioka might feature a bit more but probably not much. Have to think of Broadhead as a bonus if he’s available at all.

Difference being Defoe is older but is also dropping down 2 levels with safc. I'd be confident he'd still be scoring 1 in 2 average over our final games this season.

Just because the fans want the romance of re-signing Defoe it doesn't mean that it's right for the club or even for Jermain himself. It's a lovely idea but signing a 39yo with less than 10 mins football in the last 8 months isn't really fitting in with the recruitment model we have seen in the last 12 months.

Seems to be a lot of focus on "Johnson blocking the deal" but if it isn't right then it isn't right and we need to trust the club
Exactly my thinking

You may well be right, but I hope not.

Just as it was urgent and obvious we needed to change our defensive set up cos we were leaking too many goals; with Broadhead's injury we need another goal scorer for a promotion push.

Defoe may be the answer? Personally I would bring another striker to partner Stewart and have Defoe as well.

Just seems like an absolute no brainer. JD has looked after himself and isn't a normal 39 year old player. Remember as well this is League One not La Liga, remember the 148 easy chances that Will Grigg has missed, he didn't get those by running himself into the ground for 90 minutes whilst displaying lightning quick pace.

JD would score goals and would make a difference for us, I honestly think he could be about the best possible striking option there is available at this current time.

Has LJ not already turned him down, so he’s not coming
It has been revealed that Sunderland will not be signing former striker Jermaine Defoe, after Lee Johnson had doubts over the 39-year-old’s squad role and match fitness, Scott Wilson says.

Nobody knows what’s happened re Defoe I definitely know that if I was a manager of any company or business and someone applied for a job and in the interview I didn’t think he/she was up to it then I wouldn’t hire him/her and so would everyone on this board.
