I agree we need him as we are short of strikers. The sh!t part of this deal was that in typical Chelsea fashion, they came in at the last moment, which makes it impossible to get a replacement. To be honest, Burstow looked like a genuine promise, with the excitement of looking forward to watching him grow. But he isn't there yet. He's a youngster and sometimes gets bullied by League 1 defenders, and until he went, my view was that this season would be a case of bringing him on a bit at a time. Looks like he'll be starting a lot more than I was expecting, then leaving. So I hope Chelsea paid over the odds.
What do you get for an 18 year old who has played 7 games in league 1 and scored once or twice? 5 million? 4 million and a 20% sell on clause? If we get 4m up front and use it to fund a real charge next season, it will be good business - let's not forget we have spent a lot of the last decade in this league so pretending we are 'massive' is a bit out of date. And the old days of watching Paul Walsh play for years and then go to Liverpool are the past. I hope we got money to buy some established players who can hit the ground running next year, Time will tell. But let's not forget we got him for free from Maidstone in 2020 so he's not exactly one who has come through the ranks.
Finally good luck to Mason Burstow. No blame for me for following the dream into the big time. And to be honest, if decent youngsters see we treat our young stars with decency and respect, they may be more inclined to sign a professional form with us. It just goes to highlight that we need to get out of this league.
Did Jermaine Defoe go to Sunderland? He's a free agent so the deadline is irrelevant there!!
