Won't knock the club for letting him go, at the time he just couldn't recover from his injury and it did look like his career was finished. It's took him quite a few years to get to where he is now, but good luck to the lad. I hope he is successful wherever he goes. I'll never forget his save against Bolton :emoticon-0115-inlov

Movement at last!

Sunderland have made a bid to take Bordeaux left back Diego Contento on loan for the rest of the season, according to Sky sources.

The 26-year-old has been capped by Germany at youth level but holds an Italian passport.

He made 49 appearance for Bayern Munich before moving to Bordeaux in 2014.

The move for Contento would accelerate Patrick Van Aanholt's likely departure to Crystal Palace.
 
According to sky we are in for a left back called Diego Contento from Bordo on loan. He played for Bayern but got displaced by Philip Llam when he switched back to left back apparently - he then transfered to the french club

I have asked a few times but nobody seems to wanna answer.

It says no more than two season long domestic loans.

Surely Jan-May doesn't count as season-long?

Not that any of this matters as it's the Daily Star so prob not gonna happen either way.

Pretty sure you can't have more than two same league domestic loans at the club at one time regardless of length of loan. I'll have look see what I can find.

So basically unless we've already agreed to sign either Januzaj or Denayer permanently and the deal is now set in place, or we need an emergancy loan keeper, we can't registrar another domestic loan. It doesn't differentiate between season long and short term loan anywhere and with it stating 'any' I can only assume the length of loan is irrelevant in this case.

Huge backfire if there's a deal been put in place for either of these two since they joined. Man U could always sell Januzaj to free us a loan as I know for a fact the sale of a player can cut short a loan at an other club.

Crystal Palace are set to complete the signing of Sunderland full-back Patrick van Aanholt, after an initial fee of £9m has been agreed between the two clubs.
The Telegraph reports that van Anholt will have a medical at the club ahead of a proposed move, which would see manager Sam Allardyce complete his second signing at the club, following the arrival of Jeffery Schlupp from Leicester City.
 
Reports this morning suggest Sunderland left-back, Patrick van Aanholt, is due in London today for a medical; presumably that means David Moyes now has a replacement lined up.
According to at least one journalist active on social media this morning, Sunderland's Patrick van Aanholt is having a medical today at Crystal Palace as Sam Allardyce seeks to seal a £9m deal for the left-back which may rise to £12m with add-ons.
For cash-strapped Sunderland, the sale will presumably allow David Moyes some flexibility in bringing new faces into his faltering, fractured squad. Palace manager, Sam Allardyce, appeared to make van Aanholt one of his targets as soon as he entered the door at Selhurst Park and has been actively chasing him for a couple of weeks.
Crystal Palace are thought to have made at least two bids for the Dutchman which Sunderland rejected. £9m+ appears to have been settled on as a decent figure for the man who has been at the Stadium of Light since 2014, signed for a figure thought to have been around the £1.5m-mark.
There has likely been but two hurdles to overcome in sealing the deal - price and the ability of David Moyes to identify a replacement. Sky Sports broke the news last night that Sunderland have made a move to sign German-born left-back, Diego Contento, from Bordeaux on a loan deal until the end of the season.
The news that van Aanholt is travelling to London for his medical certainly indicates that both of those obstacles have more or less been overcome.
Contento has been at FC Girondins de Bordeaux since 2014, signed from Bayern Munich. He hasn't enjoyed the most consistent of times in Ligue 1 in truth and has been linked with a move to Italy for a while. The chance to test himself in the Premier League has probably come at a good time for the 26-year-old.
Van Aanholt departs having been a key figure under successive managers since he was signed from Chelsea by Gus Poyet. He was initially brought in as a replacement for Marcos Alonso who had excelled during his season-long loan spell in 2013-14. Never the most consistent defender, or indeed performer, the Dutchman has continually frustrated elements of the Sunderland faithful though his attacking ability and talent with the ball at his feet are unquestionable.
The 26-year-old was bought in a summer which is but one of a perpetual cycle of dodgy purchasing spells by Sunderland. He arrived on the heels of Billy Jones, Jordi Gomez and Costel Pantilimon; with the latter two lasting about five minutes at the Stadium of Light. Van Aanholt is one of the few buys in recent years which - with confirmation of his sale - will have turned a profit when they have moved on.

Back at Sunderland, David Moyes’s attempts to replace Patrick van Aanholt have been frustrated by rejections from Swansea over Neil Taylor and Everton over Bryan Oviedo. He is now exploring a loan move for Bordeaux’s Diego Contento.

Hulls’s Robert Snodgrass is also undergoing a medical at West Ham today - and, given the seriousness of the knee injury which necessitated two operations and sidelined him for 16 months before the winger’s return to action last spring - it is likely to be thorough.

NEWCASTLE and Crystal Place are considering a late raid for Everton ace James McCarthy, according to reports.

The Daily Mail claim the duo are both keen to secure his services.

Sunderland had been linked with a swoop - but the midfielder doesn't fancy a move to the Premier League strugglers.

McCarthy was snapped up from Wigan in 2013 for £1.2m.

But he could struggle for regular first-team action following the arrival of Morgan Schneiderlin from Manchester United.

A move to south London or Tyneside might be an attractive proposition for the Ireland international.

And with backing from the club's wealthy investors, the club could be on the up.

Newcastle are currently riding high in the Championship as they eye a return to the top-flight.

A move to St James' Park would mean an initial drop in standard, but regular playing time and a swift return to the Premier League looks likely.
