Hard to tell at the minute mate, i def wanted another striker in as feel the more goal scorers you have the better. I do think a front 4 of gelhardt amad clarke n roberts will rip teams to peices though so if they jel (and stay fit) we will do well.

I honestly couldn't think who i wanted us to sign last night if the simms deal wasnt coming off. Strikers are so hard to find, expecially to fit our model/dressing room. I would have liked us to go for will dickson or joe hugill on loan - would both be decent off the bench.

Suppose time will tell, i do think some folk have gone over the top and totally written off our season. The annoying thing is if stewart and evans werent injured id be saying we had a class window

Edit - i also think that gelhardt will hold the ball up for us, while he isnt as good a presence as stewart, hes very strong on the ball and he will run the channels all game long for us

He is a topper player no doubt about it. It's a good deal for us that one.

I really do feel we will miss a presence a s outball though and have to give up a load of possession.

Generally speaking ....

Good Championship strikers are at good Championship clubs and most of the clubs believe they're in with a shot at the playoffs. If not they're desperate to avoid the drop.

Good L1 strikers are in L1 because they've not yet been seen as capable of playing at a higher level.

Good PL strikers are going nowhere and the few spares available may not want to live in Sunderland.

Strikers from Europe are a bigger risk and may not want to come here either.

Some people make it sound like there's a StrikersR'Us store where you can order online ...

... our team spirit is absolutely phenomenal, let's not disrupt it with a Danny Graham ffs.

I feel let down i also think the supporters and TM have been let down.

Iirc this is the 3rd transfer window that we have not bought a striker.

I keep getting told we have a great recruitment team and given time they will get it right.. it seems they can get the easier transfers over the line but not the tough ones

Yes we have lots of wingers but few strikers..

We might think we are on the right track as a club, but there is hole in the centre of it.
To be honest I dont feel let down mate. Said a few times now I did feel let down when they signed Defoe, genuinely, and glad they havent been conned again into signing anyone that wont fit. This side, players, mgt, behind scenes, and ownership have done enough for this club in the last 2 years to not have me feel let down at anything they didnt achieve in a very contrived transfer window where in all likelihood the incompetencd of the likes of Everton have contributed to the outcome. I cant wait for Milwall personally and to see Gelhardt.

Yeah i do like a player like that as well, always hard to find those type of players

If our injury record improves then i think we will be fine.

Im choosing to stay positive at the minute

Like you said earlier as well. Even Everton struggled for a striker !

I still see an exciting end to the season and just wish the buggers would release the tickets for next weeks replay with Fulham.

Am I right in thinking that Gelhardt is unavailable for the Fulham (and of course Leeds) game.

If so, we can try out a different formation, 5-5-0
Possibly, 6-4-0 if we are getting pounded.

This, playing the above formations, could help us in League games if Gelhardt gets injured.

There’s always Luke to try out as centre forward. He’s good in the air, can press as good as Ross with all his energy and he has played in almost every other position.

Finally, if you’ve read this far, don’t take the above too seriously.

You’re right - one person daft mentioning O’nien playing as a striker is bad enough but numerous is taking the piss.

Let’s not sign a striker and cut our nose off to spite our face and play O’nien there instead. I’ve heard it all :emoticon-0102-bigsm why not just give Danny Bathh a go he’s 6’5 he’ll be a good target man.

I had the same daft thought about Alese, tall, fast good in the air. Worth a go in training to see if we have a reverse Dave Watson.

Batth and O'Nien up top is a good shout, it'd be like a better version of Quinn and Phillips.

Gooch is ya man as back up striker. Go on YouTube and watch a video of the goals he's scored, some proper centre forward goals in there, good movement, sharp, good finishes. Played along the forward line before.

Genuinely wouldn’t be against this, might stop him getting his token yellow cards too :emoticon-0102-bigsm

A tale of two clubs...

Everton fail to sign a striker national Sky sports news fans up in arms calling for the board to quit!

Sunderland fail to sign a striker (none bought for 3 windows), fans happy and smiling saying what a great recruitment team we have and that our strategy is spot on.

Hmm :emoticon-0133-wait:

The difference there is that Everton are in freefall, probably coming down with one sicknote striker and (sadly) one decent championship striker. Their team is bereft of confidence and they’ve just sacked their manager and appointed Billy Boring. There owners are widely considered incompetent.
We have pretty much everything in place to take the club back to the Premier League. Great owner, backroom staff, manager and exciting young players.
No comparison really.
