I'm a long way from Austin's biggest fan, but selling two strikers without replacements would be a bit much. Particularly given that I'm guessing the options to actually sell him are pretty limited at the moment...loaning him to save half his wages (about 1.1m through the end of the year) or some such isn't really worth it.

Regardless of whether Charlie stays or goes, I absolutely think we need to sign a striker. I've said that many times. Selling Austin wouldn't make me want one any more than I already do. And equally, retaining Austin would not in any way placate me in the event that we don't sign a striker. At the end of the day, Ings is our only striker who I'm happy to see starting in the PL for us. One striker isn't enough, especially with his injuries this season.

But as something of a separate issue, whilst Austin is here he is chewing into our wage budget, using up a space in Ralph's wish for a smaller squad, and inevitably going to receive greater game/bench time than the likes of Gallagher and Obafemi. Given too that he has no legs, I'm completely fine with moving him on.

From the Telegraph article, this will be an actual sale and not a loan. Said they’ve received bids shy of their valuation, but will likely compromise in order to let him go this window.

.

Absolutely on the nail.

I have no issue with moving Charlie on. We're absolutely in need of a good striker rather than more strikers...if moving Gabbiadini, Austin and Long in one window allowed us to bring in a good striker, we'd be further ahead. Moving two of them with no replacement would make me wonder whether perhaps we'd have been better off trying to convince Gabbiadini to buy in, though.

Plus Koeman and Pellegrino.

And Les Reed

Note that the list of offenders doesn't include a much maligned Frenchman. Whatever his faults, you couldn't accuse Puel of not using young players.

Comparing our kids against Derby's super-kids on loan I thought they did OK. It is obvious that none of us want to be relegated, but a return to the Southampton way with the Academy would make me happy.
