I think it is around the enter backs and keeper we need to build.

Mignolet, Skrtel and Sakho are fine. As are Toure and Agger.

I'm not sure Kelly is up to being an attacking ful back in our system. But could be good for center back.

We obviously need a DM in front of the CB's.

Enrique is good for LB but is injured to much. Our alternative options are rubbish.

Johnson has been poor. Flanagan is good but also young and raw. Could Wisdom step up next season?

Have to disagree on Kelly - has pace, strength, not afraid of a tackle, will go up and down that line like a train... a much better option to Johnson currently.

As for the rest of the back line:

Skrtel looks too nervy too often, he's a good CB but there are doubts, if we sense them the team must.

Toure isn't one for the future but good filler/squad player.

I rate Agger, always have always will.

Enrique, very powerful and pacy, bit crazy and rash too. Depends on which Enrique shows up really.

Johnson, well, he's always on the pitch.

Sakho is one for the future as well as the present... can be one of the top defenders in the world.

Ilori... ??? No clue. Hunch says trash, looks lightweight for the position.

Coates, get rid for as much as we can still get, crock and useless.

What we need are players for the present / future as I say about Sakho, i.e. those who are currently playing at a certain level and have potential to develop further and only get better. We've got so many defenders but such a shoddy defence it doesn't say good things about our scouting/transfer decision making back there, too much gambling on maybes and might justs, if we want to compete at the top we've got to go after the big game.

Kelly was very good before he was injured but he seems to be struggling at the moment.

However I don't think he is technically that good, and Rodgers wants players who are technical and play with intelligence. The same applies to Enrique who is a strong squad player but Rodgers wanted another left back before he was injured. Wisdom is a better option at right back than Kelly IMO.

The reason I said that we need a new RCB is because we should be looking for a long term partner for Sakho.

I know you all love Lawro's opinion:

January transfers not essential for Reds:

Some Liverpool fans are getting a bit twitchy at the lack of action in this month’s tranfer window.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if the Reds didn’t sign anybody in January.

I really don’t know what Brendan Rodgers is looking for.

Yes, there is always scope for improving a team and a squad. But there is no glaring area that needs massive improvement in the first team.

In terms of the attack, just look at the number of goals they are scoring. How can they improve that?

The defence has been a bit leaky, but Liverpool have spent a lot of money there already this season and I’d imagine it’s more a case of Rodgers trying to work out his best centre-back partnership.

Daniel Agger has sadly become very injury-prone again, so for me, when fit, it appears Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho are Rodgers’ preferred choice.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Mohamed Salah.

I’ve seen him play a few times at home for Basle against Chelsea and Tottenham and he has always done well.

Salah is quick. I’ve seen him on the left and the right flank, and he reminds me of Raheem Sterling only two or three years further down the line in terms of his development.

He is a decent winger but, like any wide player, he can catch your eye and drive you mad over the course of the same match.

The suggested asking price of £16m is far too much. I’d value him at half that. And Liverpool can even wait until the end of the season.

After all, if they finish in the top four, they will be able to attract a different kind of player.

I'v highlighted the key quote that shows Lawro's footballing genius.

un ****ing beleivable <doh>

is he on one last hoorah before he gets sacked in wumming us or something.

From Daily Telegraph on BBC Gossip pages:

"Liverpool are ready to make a formal bid for Basel's 21-year-old Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah, who has been valued at £12m by the French side."

Last time I checked Basel were a Swiss team <doh>

A lot of the reliable local journos now running with the Salah story - we want him for £8m but Basel want £12m.

yeah... we really need CMs not rumours about wingers who won't do a thing to improve us over the next 6 month, nor likely over the next 3 years.

fine he's a CL player of "some " repute" but ok... we wanted better didn't get them moses is useless.... but would you rather hope 4 men up front could rotate with one game a week or KNOW your midfield is in big trouble.

I'd rather us try sort the CM slot now.

Cracking rumour this one:

Liverpool's Brazilian midfielder Lucas, 27, could face a lengthy period of time on the sidelines after sustaining a knee injury in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

<applause>

Telegraph reporting that Johnson's contract won't be renewed in the summer - again, nothing new but a reliable journo is now reporting it.

jsut want to say that points to lawro assuming we are a mid table side... LFC are fine.. they can't get 4th so why improve... what a muppet he is.

Our team needs 8 players according to ferguson to win the title.. would you believe a drunken sodomite or lawro..

I'd go for what Ferguson said (feel dirty now). Guy knew football, also knew Man U were spent, that he'd have to buy a whole new squad and that it was never going to happen. So got himself out right on the cusp.
